Hello,
i'am building a british Sherman which was in service in june 1944 in france. Now i'am looking for the right color. I want to use acrylic paint and can get Tamiya or Gunze colors. What will be the right green?
Thanks in advance
Harald

Try the MAFVA resources page for info on British colours. Unfortunately, the colour mixes are only given as Humbrol or Revell shades. As you are building a Sherman (unless it was heavily modified like the Firefly, when it would be repainted to British specs) they could come in standard U.S. olive drab or in the British version SCC15, which paint makers incorectly refer to as khaki drab. The Tamiya O/D is said to be a pretty good match straight out of the jar. I'm not sure about their khaki drab.

"Right" is a matter of more than a little debate. :-)
For SCC15 I like Tamiya OD plus a little bit of a medium green to give just a shade of green to it. Lighten up with a yellow ochre colour (like Tamiya Panzer Yellow) instead of white to keep the colour from "greying".

Thans for your advices. Since I'am not the hero mixing colors I'd like to find a hue what matches decent.
My references recommend Humbrol 159. Gunze H80 looks quite similar to me.
The color drawings from Concord's "British Tanks of WWII: (2) Holland & German 1944/45" show a tone that looks like Gunze H304. Tamiya XF-51 is somewhere between. I'am tending to Gunze H80. What says the expert?

Harald, I have used Gunze H80 before and it did not work well for me. NWE British Shermans could either be painted in U.S. Olive Drab No. 9 or British SCC 15, the British approximation for U.S. Olive Drab. Unless the British Sherman was reworked for some reason such as repair or Firefly conversion, it would likely remain in U.S. Olive Drab, the standard lend lease color. Tamiya’s Olive Drab (lighten a bit with XF57 or XF4 or even XF21 before use) is about the best U.S. WWII Armor Olive Drab available. For SCC 15, I use a slight modification of the suggested mix in Tamiya’s Cromwell kit; my SCC 15 mix is XF1:1+XF26:8+XF52:8.
If you still want to use Gunze, try H405 or H420:3+H340:1 for SCC 15. For Olive Drab, you could use H78:3+H340:1 to get a good approximation. HTH, Rich
