The Chevy and GMC were designed to take dual wheels on the front as well as the back. Typically they were used only in very wet/soft conditions to allow the truck to "float" a bit more on the mud or snow.

Were they really designed for this. If so how often would you see one of them.

Without a doubt duals will fit on the front. I have ran across 2 pics from the net in the last few days showing duals on the front.

One was showing duals on the front of a front mounted A frame, the other was a GMC slugging through the mud.

I don't know how common front duals were. My guess would be not too often.

Was done, not really common though. Your pic is on a CCKW 352 with short bed. Here is one on a more common, restored CCKW 353 long bed, as in the Tamiya kit. I bet they made turning a lady.

It was very commonly done in muddy wet and sandy conditions along with the fitting of wheel chains. The front hubs of the GMC-CCKW were designed to take dual wheels. The SWB GMC-CCKW 352 had 2 spares so this could be done easily while you had to arrange for a second spare for the LWB GMC-CCKW 353.

The other thing that was done in times of tyre shortages was to make the truck into just 6 single wheels by removing the outter of the rear duals.

cheers

Cliff, do you have any pics you could post of the 6 single wheel type?

Does he have pics :-) :-)
I knew the second he saw CCKW in a post title, he'd be all over this like an aussie on... ...um an aussie on a post titled CCKW? Anyway, good to see you around Roo.

Your biggest hurdle when doing this conversion is the fuel tank and the spare wheel mount which went behind the cab. If you have access to the Italeri Water Tank Truck kit you can get the correct spare wheel mount and copy it (there is only one spare on the tanker).

LWB 353 WB = 4.166 metres
SWB 352 WB= 3.683 metres.

you need to cut 14mm out of the chassis to make the kit a SWB 352.

Tom I am not sure if I have got photos showing the GMC's on single wheels due to tyre sortage or not. I may have just read about it. If I do find some pics I will post them. But you must remember that these were not a 'TYPE' just an ordinary truck with the outter dual wheel on the rear removed.
