Hey all. Recently I started changing over to Vallejo acrylics for my painting. I have bought only the model color and I love them. My question is has anyone used them for airbrushing and if so how are they. I realize they make the model air colors but I really don't want to buy both, I'd rather just stick with the model colors. Thanks in advanced!!

Anthony, the whole point of the modelAir range is that they are for spray painting. You'll get much better results using them. The other range will require thinning with isopropyl alcohol or Windex. Then you'll have to experiment to find the best ratio of thinner to paint for your particular airbrush.

yes vin i understand the model air part and while I do agree with you it just kinda gets expensive to purchase both lines in their entireity. thats why I'm trying to use the model line. Being a college student agin at 37 the money is tight, lol. By the way Vin your features are great. I read and save every one!

Just a thought, but is there not a thinner made for Vallego paints? i recall reading something to that effect on another post here.. If thats the case, you could try a bottle or two of that..

I've just started using Vallejo model colour paints as well, I've used methelated spirits to thin them, But this creates a skin ( like on hot chocolate ). I also find the colours a little strange or maybe I'm using the wrong ones. I got the Panzer colours set and the Dark Yellow does not look right as a DAK colour or as a RLM factory base colour.......So which colour do you use?

I’m with Tordenskiold, I use lukewarm filtered water (bought a cheap filter jug).
I mix the paint in an old dropper bottle to the consistency of milk, about 1 Part paint to 2 to 3 Parts water. I have found that using an undercoat does help a lot. I use a cheap Auto Primer and it works great.

Model Color spray very well, but not my main choice of airbrush paint. I use the Vallejo Thinner at about 60% thinner 40% paint and it works fine.
Model Air paints are, well, poor in my experiance. They are so thin and don't settle uncoated plastic. So I've found I've got to prime with a none Vallejo paint The range is also smaller and more expensive than Model Color - Just my opinion

I currently use both Model Color and Model Air paints, both by brush and airbrush. When spraying MC its important to use the special thinner designed for it, as using anything else tends to give poorer performance - and I have tried. I have had no paint sticking issues when priming with MC or MA, you just need to make sure you have removed all the mold release agent with a warm soapy wash.

I use model air a lot but also have some model colour and have sprayed this too. I was very pleased with the result. I used 50/50 paint to model-air thinner plus a couple of drops of de-ionised water. No problems with adhesion. I have found that there seems to be considerable differences in how people dilute and use the paints. Some don't dilute much and use low pressure, I dilute a fair bit and use high pressure. I think there are ideal combinations for each air-brush/compressor combination and painting style.
