You know Volkmar and his treehouse do not abide by the stict contest dimension rules. That is my own mistake - I should have read them properly before starting this dio .

Still, since I put in so much work to make the tree, the tree house and scratchbuilt this Volkmar idiot on his swing, I post some new (this time sharper) pictures of the whole thing.

1) The whole vignette. You see a tree with a little tree house where the sniper will find his shooting position. Whoever built the treehouse for his kids, added a swing and a rope ladder at the same time. A sniper has spent quite some time in perfect hiding in the tree house, but since no enemy activity is expected soon he came down to stretch his legs, have a pee and a smoke. He sits in the swing, smoking a sigarette. His Mauser rests on his leg.

2) Volkmar on his swing.

3) Volkmar from the back.

4) Volkmar : close up. As you can see I'm no champion at painting faces. Much better than my previous attempt already, but not quite there yet. I'm happy with his posture, though. The arms and legs are scratchbuilt, only the hands are figure hands. He should be holding a sigarette between the fingers of his right hand, but it seems to be broken off ! (I even added a fine thread of cotton that was painted grey to show smoke - it looked cute !).

5) The tree hut. This picture is sharper than the previous ones. The roof was all built in shingles, but the snow hides all that. I still had to put glass into the windows, but since this is not an official entry... Maybe tonight ? The hut was painted light blue to simulate the kids' world, and was heavily weathered after that.

6) The tree. This is what the dio was all about. Look at the colors of the stem on some of the pics above, and here. I think the tree looks very well, but the snow is cluttered a bit too much. That's the result of my glue technique. The message I learned from this is : never use white glue again for this for 2 reasons : - it clogs and - it turns yellow. i had to repaint the whole thing white again after a week !

So, this is the whole project.

Since this cannot be an official entry, I'm working on a sequel. Expect more news in a week or two (next weekend is all taken for other priorities and all my nights are already taken this week for work and official functions).

I'm glad I did this dio, though. It proved my technique of building trees, and I'll try to update the tree making story into a feature article.

I'd be really happy to read your honest comments.

Wow - That is truely a nice dio. On one hand to bad the tree is to large, on the other hand, Man I'm glad I don't have to compete against that one

Very good work. The tree is awsome, the figure is very good. The face is fine, I like it. The posture is very good. He looks like an adult on a kids swing! Very nice. One question - "to scope or not to scope", I've seen it both ways so you decide, do you want to add a scope the Mauser? Not very important, it does not distract from the dio or feeling at all.

Is that real snow it the background of the first pictures? If so wouldn't it be cool to take photos of that with real snow as a backdrop?

Can't wait to see you next work of art.

I`m so glad that Volkmar is still using his old place
Looks to me that he forgot all the problems that came with the size limitations
He looks like he has fun
or is he just meditating???

Anyway looks good man
What`s your next idea that will feature in the contest??

Jan,

It still really hurts to see that this effort is not going to make it to the contest.... From what I've seen so far, this is really something special. Not only the building , but also the composition.... man it really made my heart beat faster when I first saw it !!

I share your pain, and like to state my admiration for this job very, very well done just one more time !!

I'd love to see the next entry !!

Jan,

Like others I think it is a shame that this can not enter, but be proud, you made a beautiful little dio of it and I hope to see it for real one day.

If all goes well, I'll be at the show in Lier on 8 December (though it is my mother-in-law's birthday #:-) ). Maybe I''l bring the dio, maybe the M35. Still have to decide on that. I had hoped to spend the day in Lier, but I have to be in Antwerp for lunch to celebrate the Big Family Event

LOL !!! The white blotches you see is PLASTER on the wall : I've been doing some repairwork last week, and I let it dry for a few days before repainting !
You seem to overestimate our winter season here. Last permanent snow was about four years ago
