I'm in the process of gathering photos of the street fighting in Hue and the Citadel by US Marines,Tet Offensive, 1968.
I will be constructing the dio on a 16x20 inch frame.
It will include eight 1/35 scale infantry Marines(from Dragon models) and one 1/35 scale M48a3 Patton tank(from Tamiya)
Unfortunately I have only a few photos of the street fighting(several Marines behind a wall in a firefight). It's unclear what's behind them and what their shooting at or into( a bunker, house or bridge?).
How can I make it historally accurate w/o more photos? Any suggestions?

Since the VC "invaded" Hue I doubt there would be bunkers. It would be mostly house to house

it was an attack surprised during the "tet" where it was supposed to have a cease fire. Maybe read on the subject will bring more details since the photographs have the rather rare ...

the only place in Hue that the VC had a fixed defensive positions was in the old citadel in Hue. Other than that it was bitter house to house fighting. Other times the VC would overrun ARVN compounds and use those.
Usually on the History channel they end up showing Hue during the tet offensive.

I was thinking about this idea as well. I looked at Google and I think Corbis. Also check out the movie " Full Metal Jacket", I think it has some scenes of Tet during the last part of the movie. It may not be 100% accurate but might give you the flavour of street fighting in Vietnam, a thought anyhow.

Did you ever thought about just reading a book?
I did a lot of research ages ago about Tet and Hue in particular. I even found a few survivors on an internet forum (mind you that was back in 1996 - 97) and one of them send me a great book. The tile is The battle for Hue. It contains all the answers to your questions and a lot of protographs including the famos proto of a US flag flying over the citadel.
According to the rules they had to take it down and fly a S Vietnamese flag above the US one but immediately upon capturing the Citadel, they flew a US flag only. For a really short period of time though.
Anyhow a good book to read on the topic.

I agree. There is no shortage of books on the Vietnam War, or Tet more specifically, or even the Battle for Hue.
A decent start might even be the Osprey Campaign Series book on the Tet Offensive, which was one of their first in the series.
I have a bunch of large, coffee-table book style books on Vietnam, with no shortage of photos, maps etc. I'm sure these can still be found in some bookstores, particularly some of the bargain discounter type stores.

Hi All,
Some of the film Full Metal Jacket was actually filmed in East London, England at an old industrial complex in an area called Beckton (the big white warehouse type buildings that the sniper was using for cover). I used to know what the actual complex was called but I can't remember now. When I used to live in London I had to travel past the site every day to get to work.
All the best
Tom

One of my growing up buddy's, Rick, was right there, smack in the middle of Tet, the DMZ and elsewhere. He said the NVA were in the sewers and shooting out from the drain systems as well as inside houses/shops where they fortified them with timbers, bricks etc...
Lots of rubble and burned/charred wood/timbers will be needed. Rick said he hardly ever saw any live ones.

Hi Ray,
I found this book really useful http://www.amazon.co.uk/Marines-Hue-City-Portrait-Combat/dp/0760325219 you have to read it though, to get a good account of the fighting. There are also some great "then and now" pictures of where the fighing took place in the city. If I remember it also refers to a website run by the Texas Tech which has a great photo archive. I'll dig out the url for you.

Go to Youtube and type in battle for hue city. Lots of Marine correspondent and news footage available. Also check out some of the Marine Corps Vietnam reunion sites on the web. This is where I got most of my info, after reading about a dozen books first. History Channel is great for the footage, just turn off the sound. They don't get a lot of the details correct. Check your local VFW and Amvets clubs, you may find someone who was there or knows someone who was there. Check the link below for some pics as well.

I always wanted to produce a diorama on the battle of Hue, seeing pics of the battle and having watched the movie Full metal jacket, i thought a good idea would be an m48 and Marines laying down covering fire as a group of fellow Marines drag a wounded buddy back to their lines, to me it would fill the gap left in not knowing what these men were specifically firing at in contemporary photos. just my two cents.

Hue was a city inside a city.the Citidel was the old provincal capitol and was surrounded by a 30 ft high by 30 ft wide stone wall filled with "spider holes" where the vc/nva could hide.i forget how many gates it had .there was a more "modern" city around that. The us Marines took the city and citedel, the arvn troops did nothing,.So you had house to house, fighting to cross the perfume river, and storming a "castle".should get plenty of ideas. I was there in 1971,thank God i missed that one.
