For a manhole cover, cut a piece of sheet styrene into a circle. Scribe some lines in it in a pattern, radiating from the center, or across it, whatever makes it look more like a manhole cover. Paint it black then weather with rust and dirt.

Same can be done for drains, or use a piece of a fan housing or any other screen-like object. Take a look at small household objects that may have screens or vents for ideas or to use too.

Hi,

I know you asked about building drain/manhole covers but in case you haven't seen them plus model do a set of Sewer Hatches at about £7.99.

Even if you don't want to buy them have a look and it will give you an idea of thickness and style.

You can view them at:

www.netmerchants.co.uk

Go to Buildings and select 1/35

Hope this helps.

Al

Luke, same with Calibre35. Hit a review site for ideas for what a manhole cover looks like, and consequently what you can make to pass for one
Cheers

Just you have a look round the house at spare change, lids, caps, etc. etc for something round, flat and just the right size.

you're halfway there once you've found something suitable...then all you need to do is figure out what pattern you want into it and add the pattern to your round object.

That, my friend, is where your imagination takes over

Yes... I too have found that checking out Blast, and Plus models web sites have reaped rewards of being able to see examples of European drains, manhole cover, sewer grates, etc, and allowed me to scratch-build one when needed.
Breaking items down to their simlpest forms, and building from there, young Luke is a great way to start scracth-building your own items, and gaining experence, and developing your modeling skills.

Grummpy, I think you have seen Star Wars one too many times...

Luke, personally I would scratch build this, as Dave and Jon have both recommended. It should be fairly simple to do.

If you would rather purchase I will offer another alternative and that is O scale train stuff, there are some available and much cheaper... $4.00 will get you three! If you make it up to Des Moines sometime I will take you on a tour of the hobby shops around town. If you need anything you PM me and we shall see what we can do... I am unsure of your age, but if your parents bring up this way you let me know, and I would be willing to meet you all for lunch and a tour.

Regards,
Paul

The PlusModel stuff is great. I have the kit. They do great work. If you are really in a jam, I could trade.

Hi Luke, you really should take Paul up on that offer about the tour. He took Tankysgal1 and I on such a tour and Des Moines has some fantastic hobby shops. Mary and I drive over there pretty often to visit Paul and his wife and to go to the hobby shops. Its a heck of a drive for us, we live about 4 hours from there, but well worth it. Cheers Kevin
