Doing my first pin washes ...
I am using Daler-Rowney oils diluted with Mineral Spirits.
Once it is dry it just looks like flecks of brown dust/dirt around the seams etc. I have never seen a washed model except what I see on the web... (hard to see detail) am I doing something wrong?

Sounds like the paint isnt dissolving in the mineral spirits..Perhaps a bit of paint and yout thinner in a jar and shake the living daylights out of it.. Have you thought of using acrylics for your washes? I have never seen acrylics behave like that..

Sounds like the oils you are using do not have extremely finely ground pigments. Student grade, and cheaper brands have courser ground pigments than the higher priced, and top quality artist grade oils.

Just started using oils myself. From my limited experience it could be the thinner not fully desolving the paint or teh paint itself having coarse pigment. I use hihh quality paint and the solvent recommended.
Hope this helps a bit!
