Now with new the 1/48th scale armor kits being released I thouhgt it would be cool to model a D-Day scene incorporating aircraft & armor. Maybe a column of Shermans passing by a wrecked C-47 or glider. I know Monogram made a 1/48th scale C-47 but what about gliders in that scale?

I did a search and was unsuccessful. Does not mean that it's Not out there....Wait for a bit and if no responses - put the same question to our very knowledgable AC guys.

I have seen that Italeri kit. It is 1/72.

Italeri has a "Horsa" and Testors has a "WACO" both are 1/72,
I'm currently working on a dio similar to your idea Nigel in that scale, using the WACO.
Even in 1/72 it is working out to pretty good size, you may want to think about scratch building a portion of the glider from plans and photos (since most of them were damaged on landing) ?

Airfix January 1970 published plans for the Hamilcar Glider in 1/72 scale.
Airfix September 1976 provided some small scale Horsa plans with camouflage and markings.
The above can be upscaled by your local repro shop.
Aviation News Annual 8-28 Jan 1993 featured US Military Gliders (inc Waco & Hadrian production figures).

There is (or was) an Allied glider in 1/48 scale. A company called Sanger produced a vac-form model of the Waco CG-4a "Hadrian". It would be a rather challenging project.
EDIT I've just checked the Hannants site and it is still listed. They apparently do the Airspeed Horsa too! I think Sanger may have taken over the product line of another company, Contrail.

I've actually played around with the idea of incorporating a glider into a scene. There is nothing out there in 1/48 scale. Only the Italeri one in 72. You could try scratchbuilding one which wouldn't be to hard. Because its just a bunch of long lines.

The "Hadrian" vacuform kit might work...considering the thin workable material would suite a crashed /shot up aircraft...

There is also Great North Roads Horsa in 1/35, when it's available and if you have £180 or so going spare.

Geoff,
I took your advice(direction) and ordered a 1/48th Waco glider from Hannants...I'm looking forward to opening this oddball kit up...
