Hi:
I have Dragon's Command Staff figure set and I'm trying to find the right Vallejo colours to paint the officer's uniforms. The ones marked 'german uniform' and 'field grey' seem to be too green in colour. I'm using them in a diorama vignette with my AFV Club Pak 43/41 gun so some artillery officer's uniforms or some visiting General officer are really what I'm looking for. Are the tunics grey or grey/green or green?? What about the trousers and caps? I'm not so concerned about the badges of rank and various insignia, I just can't decide what the colour the tunic and trousers should be. I prefer Vallejo right from the bottle so something in those colours. They have a bewildering array of shades and tones. Please help....
thanks all
Bob

Bob, I wouldn't sweat it too much over getting the colour dead on. German uniforms came in a bewildering number of shades, depending on year of issue, manufacturer, age, wear & tear & weathering etc. So anything can be right from a "Pearl Grey" (some senior SS ranks) to slate grey, (M1944 uniform) or almost khaki colour (well-worn 1942 issue). That's just the wool issue field jacket, if you also factor in the Reed Green clothing, which would look identical in cut in this scale, that varies things even more. In addition, bear in mind that German officers uniforms were all private purchase, so although they conformed to something close to the set standard patterns, they could differ in detail somewhat - pocket design & position, cut etc, so the colour could be virtually anything! Some junior regimental officers bought issue O.R. clothing from the unit stores, then added their privately bought insignia. So really you could paint all four figures in this set different colours, & not be "wrong"! Personally I never use a ready mixed colour, I always mix white, black, yellow & blue until I reach a shade I'm happy with (the bonus is if you were to put all my figures together, they would all vary a bit - just like real life in fact!). With senior officers, I'd tend to reduce the green content in the breeches, so they were more "Stone Grey", while perhaps playing up the green tinge in the jacket to get a contrast.
