It's not mentioned in that review, but some modellers here in Japan claim that the upper hull is substantially too wide. Seriously too wide, like 3mm or 4mm too wide. That's a lot in 1/35!
Anyone else hear anything about this?

No - I hadn't heard that one! I'd be interested in some confirmation of that information too - I really like the STuG as a modeling subject.

Jim if you read Terry Ashleys review he says the following about the width issue...

(Quote) Given the above observations the major discrepancy is the 1.5mm overall hull width and inner hull width of 2mm which makes things a little confusing and in the scheme of things will probably not be that noticeable on the finished kit. Some of course will want to correct the errors indicated as is their prerogative but would be quite a job for the hull widths.(unquote)

so the hull is 1&1/2 mm to wide and not 5mm.

cheers
Cliff

Glad to hear the problem's not so bad.
Actually, I had heard that the discrepency was only 3-4mm, not 5mm.

What strikes me as unusual that Tamiya have went back to grey plastic for this release when of late almost all the WW2 German armour they have released has been in a tan colour, gives it a kind of retro feel to it like the kits from the 70's,
Got one on order look forward to getting it

Thanks for posting the link to Terry's review over at PMMS, Jim ! Looks like a great kit, and its the next kit on my "want" list.

I'm taking pre-orders already, so if any of you wish to order one from my shop, just let me know

I think that Tamiya will be back, judging from the looks of this kit, and from what I hear from the Tamiya Co-op, that 2006 will be a returning year for their 1/35th armor. My personal feeling is that Tamiya shouldnt be counted out just yet

Cheers !!

Too bad, since the kit looks great in the box. Glad to see Tamiya including PE and metal barrels, too. The price is also very reasonable, here in Japan, anyway. It's going for 2,500 yen at most shops, or about $21 USD.

Looks like another must have kit I love how Tamiya has included the rifling in the 75mm barrel I think that may be a first on any metal barrels I have seen

Not at all. It's standard from companies like Armorscale and DML. Tamiya are simply following a trend...

Jim, the metal barrels in the Dragon FlaK 37 kit are not rifled, but the plastic barrels in the kit are... Nice as the metal ones are, I think I'll buck a trend and try to use the plastic one. I hope that the seam will clean up neat enough to dissapear. But that'll be down to my skills ( or lack thereoff, barrel seams are not one of my favourite things.. ).

I do hope that Tamiya is going to throw it's (considerable ) weight into 1:35 again, as when they are on song their kits are difficult to fault. Like the Dragon Wagon I'm building at the moment, yes, very expensive, but the kit is a gem.

Cheers

It is probably because this is an early war variant when the Germans were still using dark gray.

Here is a picture of what I belive is a build version of the Stug.

Not build by me, but found on the internet on a japaneese site by Dr. Shinge's tank world.

Hope it is ok to post with the reference

Well it looks a nice kit,but there still not adding much on there extras,ok its got an aluminum barrel and a few metal parts but theres a long way to go to get to dragon standards.maybe Individual Tracks would have been nice.we shall have to see what 2006 brings.

As I'm reading this post by Jim and the review by Terry, the tears of joy just streaming down my eyes.

I'm happy that Tamiya haven't abandon a 1/35 scale fan like me. Ah... the joy! This one is a must buy! Even though I know the standard might not up to DML, but I will purchase this kit as show of faith and encouraging them to come out with more 35th scale kit.

Gumbade Tamiya! Tradition and quality must go on!

Thank you Tamiya... snif, snif... where's my tissue?

Well that makes for a little hope. Not particularly a subject I m interested in, but with the release of this one, maybe they will go back and do a Citroen traction car in 35th. Glad to see Tamiya didn't abandon the 35th scale the more the merrier I say
