Hello Esteem Fellow Glue Sniffer.

One question that has bothered me more than that question about which chicken or the egg come first.

I've seen many models were the windshield is painted to simulate dirt expect for the part where the wiper wiped clean.

Does that really happen or is it for asethetic reason?

I know the modern cars have wiper fluid where when you wipe your windshield the water/cleaning fulid will wet the surface of the windshield, thus improve the cleaniness of the glass.

However, in the cars/trucks of WW2 does the physics apply when there are no wiper fluid to help to create that "fan" shape on the windshield?

What is your thought on that?

Hi WC,

I guess its just for aesthetics...in real life it would not be that clean. Happy New year

In most cases the wiper does leave a mark but like a lot of weathering techniques that are used well by a lot of folk it can be made to look unrealistic very fast.

cheers

I agree with MR Roo. I did it many years ago, but stopped as it just never looked right

I posted a similar thought as well a few weeks back, Benjamin. The replies correlated to the ones you've already rec'd: although artistically interesting to the observer, probably exaggerated and unrealistic.

If the windscreen were that muddy, the driver would wet a rag and wipe down the whole thing. Nonetheless, the wipers probably could assist with some thin dust layer build up -- maybe best replicated in 1/35 models with a fine shot of dullcoat. But certainly not the opaque earth colors we sometimes see (along with the blackened muzzle ends!! Another one of my pet peeves!)

Thanks guys, I have to agree with all of you.

Roy, can you find that thread that you mentioned? I would like to read further about this topic.

More thought on this topic?
