Hi
Does anyone know of an upgrade kit to turn the afv club m35a2 into an a3 version.
From the pics ive seen it needs a new front grill, single back wheels and some other changes.
I guess i could manage most of the differences myself but the wheels are a different matter unless they are the same as used on other trucks that are available.
cheers
peter

According to my references, the tires of the M35A3 are Michelin 14.5R20. So it could theoretically be possible to use one of the aftermarket sets of Big Foot 14R20 tires available (as some are smaller than others...) But the wheel rims themselves could be a problem : they are two-piece 20X11.00 Motorwheel that seems to be specific to this truck
Still haven't tried to modify a 1/35 "Big Foot" wheel yet...

No - no aftermarket upgrade kit for an M35A3 yet.
I planned on just doing my own conversion in the near future...

What is the wedge on the wheel? How is it attached? Does it rotate with the wheel?
Thanks-
Don

It's the CTIS cover and is bolted down to the rim. CTIS is Central tire inflation system, which allows you to change the tire pressure with the push of a button and also lets you keep driving with a hole in your tire as long as it's not very big, actually a really small hole.

While the tires on an M35A3 and M923A2 look the same (same manufacturer and tread pattern), the size is quite different. Here is a photo of an M36A3 (longbed version) parked next to an M931A2 (5 ton tractor). You can see the size difference.
There are several close ups on the major differences that the A3 has in my gallery as well.

I agree with you about the visible size difference Rob, but now I'm confused : according to TM 9-2320-386-10 (concerning the M35A3) the tires are 14.5R20 ; according to TM 2320-272-10 (about the M939, M939A1, M939A2 series trucks) "the M939A1 and M939A2 series vehicles use 14.00x R20 super size tires and rear tandem singles" which seem to be quite close on paper (sorry if I always refer to TMs but US trucks are not thick on the ground around here )
How is it possible then to have such a visible difference between the two types of tires

Hi Cliff
Thanks for the reply.
Do you know why they were put back to front on the centre axle and normal on the rear one?
Did the Tyres foul?
Cheers

Hi Dus !
In fact I've got a picture showing this very configuration on a GMC in Tunisia (1958). According to the caption, this was to prevent sand from making a "roll" between the tires. BTW the wheels on the picture are neither DUKW wheels, nor "bolster wheels". Their rims have only 2 holes visible on the front but 6 visible on the back (I'm not sure I'm very clear... )
Sorry for the digression

I don't suppose you have a scan of the wheels do you?
I would like to find out more about them as I like french subjects.

Here's the data directly from Goodyear's tire data tables:
A "Military"14.00R20 is intended to be mounted on a 20 inch diameter wheel which is 10 inches wide. The overall width of the tire when mounted is actually 15.2 inches and not 14 which you'd expect, and the overall diameter of the tire (the height if you will) is 49.2 inches.
Goodyear does not currently list any 14.5R20 tires, however, Continental's data says the following for this size:
It is designed for a 10.5 inch width wheel with a 20 inch diameter, and is approximately 43.5" in overall diameter.
So the tire is "fatter" but 6" less tall. (WARNING: ENGINEER TALK FOLLOWS: That's called the "aspect ratio" or the relationship of the width to the height of the tire)
Hard to be sure from the photo Robin posted, but that could easily be a 6 inch difference in height.
Hope that helps!!

Hi
Thanks for the updated info, just to make sure iam getting this right the m35a3 truck is fitted with basially the same size rim give or take 1/2" but the overall tyre diameter therefore height is smaller than the tyre fitted to the bigfoot m923.
Guess it still doesnt help finding a suitable kit wheel/tyre combination.
On the same track but concerning the italeri m925 truck kit are these wheels ok as is oob.
