ok , here's another , yes again, question about the zimmerit.
I'm currently building the Dragon Tiger I Late ( everybody knows it by now)
Now , i was wondering if the germans appliyed Zimm on the lower sides of the hull, behind the wheels.
This might be a dumb question, but recently i came acrass a piece on the net that stated that ALL area's of the tank that where 'reachable' for a man standing on the ground where covered.

Well , divine intervention failed so I'm turning to the all-knowing

You see this a lot on the Panter tanks and some PanzerIV derivatives but I can honestly say I've never seen this on a Tiger so you're safe not doing it ..

Out of all the Tiger reference books and all other resources I can't recall ever seeing it around the running gear. Like posted above they did put it on Panthers around the running gear but I think its because if you look and compare there seems to be much less space around a Tigers to reach in and plant a mine.

Here's a secondary question alittle off topic but why bother putting zim. around the running gear in the first place when they could just plant the magnetic mine on the road wheels themselves?

good question.

all your need to do is to blow off the tracks and the Tiger is disabled.

saving private ryan springs to mind, sticky bombs :-)

A possible answer could be that the road wheels were usually covered in dust, grease, oil, mud and snow. Maybe they thought that would help prevent the magnetic mines sticking to them? Or it could have been because most road wheels, Panther,Tiger, were dished and did nto present enough of a flat surface for the magnetic mine to adhere to?

Karl, the sticky bombs were covered in axle grease i think? If so they would not have been effected by the Zim as that was designed to stop magnetic mines and not improvised ones covered in grease?

What do you think?

Thanx guys for the reply's, I just wondert because I came across a picture of a german crewmember who was lying on the tracks ( under the hull-side)
So I thought it to be possible for a man to reach there, (if for instance the tank was in urban terrain, or standing still).
thanks anyway , I'm trying Milliputty , rolled out between 2 sheets of cutt-open bags from the Tiger kit, added some talk pouder, and rolled untill paper thin, then ruff up the panzer add little water and push on, verry nice , sure gonna do more like that.
