The Tamiya KT II with some mods. The "Tiger 1" style exhaust and the "striped camo" pattern appealed to me. I opened the spent case hatch and added some spent brass. Finish is Tamiya acrylics suitably "lightened" to scale, sealed with Polyscale flat coat. MiG powders as well. Figure is the OOB Tamiya commander with an Alpine head.

All thoughts on the build are welcomed......

This looks great. I am working on the exact same kit myself trying to stay OOTB on the build as much as possible.

I really like the paint job.

What did you use for the Zimm?

Are the Tracks the kit tracks?

I like the early exhaust, did you scratch them or are they AM?

Mike,

Zimm is applied with a soldering iron..

Tracks are Fruilmodel.......

Exhaust parts were modified T1 parts from the spares box..

That's a great build - the camo is spot on. Well, everything is!

In which order did you spray the colours for the camo? I have this kit in mys stash to be built later this year and have been pondering how to approach this.

Hi Sean,

Thanks for your comments. I base coated the entire model (less tools) with Tamiya Khaki green, which is very dark. This allowed depth and shadowing in panel lines etc. Then I applied the Tamiya olive green, with about 2parts flat white to lighten it. Lastly, the red brown "stripes" (also lightened) and finally the desert yellow. I use a Badger 360, with the regulator set at 20 psi.

Crockett -

Beautifully done King Tiger! As with others of your builds that I've seen, your "zim" technique is outstanding and really enhances the details. The "new" head gives the whole vehicle more character too. Is there a wire going to the Bosch headlight? That would be the only detail that I see which is a "nit' and in no way detracts from such a terrific build. Need to get this big, bad "Cat" into combat. Do you have a diorama planned? It would be something to see! Thanks for sharing,

Steve, the build looks great, the only thing that let's it down is the zimmerit. It just looks too 'heavy'? I suppose that's one of the dangers of using a soldering iron. What sort of tip was on the the iron?

Hi Steve....Nice looking KT you got there ...Your camo is right on for tanks of the 503rd in Normandy ..good job...Zimmerit might be a bit heavy but it does look the part ... I can't tell from the pictures of the exhaust but other than the flat top plate the real exhaust is quite different from the Tiger I exhaust..I'm not sure that any of the 503rds third company had this type of exhaust but if you like it it does look different ... One thing that does need to be changed is your commander figure as you have an SS tanker in a Heer vehicle ...the head gear shows the typical SS deaths head and the camo on the uniform is typical SS as well..I know the camo is cool but just not right for a Porsche Tiger crewman.
All in all ,an excellent job ...Great work.

Thanks Rick,

I know what you mean about the figure, and the real irony is it was molded as an Army figure!, I added the PE deaths head and SS camo smock/shoulderboards
without thinking! Actually, this is a vehicle patterned after the Ersatz Abteilung unit, 500. There is a picture in "Tigers in Combat 2" showing a good view of the exhaust. It is not identical to the Tiger 1, and I did quite a bit of modification to the parts, it is pretty close to the reference photo.

I really was suprised when I saw these pics, they really "emphasized the zimmerit, believe me, with the naked eye it looks quite good and really isn't as overbearing as these pics convey.

Steve

Got to agree with Vinnie on this one Steve. The painting and the build look superb, but the Zim does look too heavy to me as well.........the camo is one of the best interpretations of this scheme that i have seen, nice one!

It's a beauty! Only comment I've got is that it is not likely for an empty shell to land on top of the turret.

Jeroen,

Thank you for your comment. I happen to have over twenty years experience as a tank crewman, commander and later building the M1 tank at Lima Ohio USA. Forgive me if I disagree with your observation. A loader manually pushing hot casings through the port hole would certainly have an opportunity to leave one on the turret roof lodged against the lifting eye.

Excellent work on your Porsche Tiger II. Love that camo scheme. I think the Zimmerit looks fine, as it is not always an easy thing to replicate.

I have this kit that I've been working on/off for quite a while now. How did you do that Tiger I-style exhaust ? Do you have any in-progress shots of how you made it ?

Something about the Porsche Tiger II has always made it my favorite version. You did a great job

Cheers !!

Thank you Robert,

As to the exhausts, I found a picture in "Tigers in Combat" 1 of two 506th Porsche tigers on railcars with these shrouded exhausts. According to the Osprey King Tiger book, they were removed from production because they allowed hot exhaust fumes to be sucked into the aircleaners. There is also a shot of a Ersatz Abteilung 500 KT Porshe with these exhausts as well. I had some extra parts from my DML Tiger so I simply cut them down and used the Tiger 1 parts to match what I saw in the photos. Let me see if I can upload the pics.

Steve. Thanks for posting that pic from Tigers in Combat 1. I own that book, plus Tigers in Combat 2, so I will take a closer look myself.

These pictures are NOT my models, but this is what I would like to acheive with the Porsche Tiger II that I do have in-progress, and build it with the early "Tiger I" style exhausts as seen here:

1) Porsche Tiger II early exhaust partly assembled

2) Porsche Tiger II early exhaust assembled (prior to paint)

3) Porsche Tiger II early exhaust finished

I'm sure other Armorama modellers who are interested in the Porsche Tiger II, and who wish to see how to build the early "Tiger I" style exhaust, can see how to go about it.

I'm working on the Tamiya Porsche Tiger II myself, and want to do this style exhaust. When I saw Steve's completed Porsche Tiger II, it renewed the interest I had in my own project.

Now, if I could only afford to get myself a nice digital camera, I could take pictures of my own work, and not use other peoples.

Hopefully Steve has some in-progress shots that he is willing to share.

Cheers !!

Alpen:

I wish I would have seen these pics before I attempted my exhaust system. I strictly worked from the photo record. Obviously, my work is rather primitive compared to the T2 pictured. I can see that I should have filled in the inboard "notches" on the shrouds. Thanks for the pics and info my friend....

regards,

Steve
