What was the last big tank used by the Russians in WW2? I mean the one comparable to the T-26 and is one available in 1/35? I should mention a "good" kit.

Sabot, would you be talking about the IS-3 Iosef Stalin? If so, then Tamiya's model is a gorgeous model kit. Like their new Leopard - worth the money.

Man, and I have this kit too. I just thought there may be an earlier ride like an IS-1 or -2. I agree that the IS-3 is nice, I traded it for a couple of 1/48 A/C kits a while back.

The IS-3 made the tail end of the War like the Pershing did - and had Patton gotten his wish to drive East they would have met each other in some glorious battles.
DML makes an IS-2 (#6012). I've got one partially built. It's pretty cool - as DML kits go, but nothing stands up to Tamiya's IS-3 in quality and detail.

Does the Tamiya kit build into a WW2 version or a post war version? Or is there any difference? I'm not quite up on WW2 Soviet stuff, T-54/55 is about as far back as my knowledge goes.

Strictly no, the IS-3 was first sighted in September 1945 - appearing in a victory parade in Berlin. Historians don't believe the IS-3 was available to Russian forces before then. DML does cover the IS-1 (#6052), IS-2 model 1943 (#6012), and an IS-2m (#6804).

True as far as I know no JS-3 made combat missions. But the JS1 and 2 did both built on the kv series of hulls.

Found a great book on soviet heavy tanks called "STALINS HEAVY TANKS" by Concord Publications. The IS-3 didnt enter service till May 1945,to late for the war in Europe, but some where sent to Manchuria against the japanese, but its not known if they saw action.
type 97 against a IS-3? don't think the japanese loved their emporer that much! lol
Last model of the IS to see action in Europe was the IS-2.

I think (give me a few hours to check) that the Tamiya kit is actually the IS-3M. This is the updated version of the IS-3, and hence would also be the post-war version (assuming that reports of the IS-3 engaging in combat are correct)

Nope, wrong. The Tamiya kit is based on the first production series. Hence, a lot of the details found on later versions is missing. If a later model is wanted, try finding the ABER photoetch set.
