First to everyone here, this is my first post on armorama and I like to say
hello to everybody and best wishes for a new year.

I'm looking for a consensus opinion about the various Tiger tank kits out there on the market.

Which kit do you guys feel is the most accurate?

I know there are different kits for different variants. I think Tamiya has at least two and Dragon has a couple as well.

Are there others out there on the market?

If there are archived articles here on Armorama of which you are aware I'd appreciate that as well.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide. I'm looking forward to learning from your collective experience.

Huh? Apparently I've been promoted to second lieuie and didn't even know it! :-)

Hey Mike:

Welcome to the Big A. I recommend the Dragon series. They have both the Initial Tiger I and the Late Tiger I. Both are superb models and have lots of extras included with them. Dragons King Tiger tanks are also pretty slick. I have the Ardennes one and I cant wait to build it.

Hope this helps

Mike, welcome to Armorama. You have (I think) 4 versions of the Tiger 1 from Tamiya, Initial, early, mid, late, 2 from DML both 3 in 1 kits, Initial and Late, 2 from Italeri, early and Late and 2 from Academy, early and mid, both Academy kits can be obtained with or without interiors. These are all in 1:35 scale.

Hi Mike ..and welcome ...Peter has pretty well named every Tiger kit available at this moment ...As stated the new Dragon kits are the newest and the most accurate kits available that being said Tamiya's kits are very buildable but are more expensive and you need to at least buy screens for the rear decks to make the look the part ,again adding to the price...Dragon is sure to fill the ranks of the Tigers very shortly and I would suggest waiting for their early and mids to appear..I'm sure the initial and late will keep you busy for a while..

Rick
p.s. I wouldn't recommend the Italeri kits and the Academy kits have a few problems with the accuracy of the turret ..

Both the tamiya and dragon kits are good, and about the same price here, dragon being about $4 cheaper, I d splurge and go Tamiya

$4.00 more expensive but you need to buy at least screens for the deck ...you get rubber tracks compared to separate links..No turned aluminum barrel ...no photo etched parts... . I don't know bout you but....

I've built Tamiya and Dragon and although Tamiya's are clean and easy to built they are more expensive and don't offer all the extras that Dragon does. The Dragon ones are accurate and detailed plus extras and variants I think they are the cream of the crop right now so they'd be my suggestion.

Archived articles, you say?
Check out this one by Vinnie Branigan (Teacher), on his building of DMLs Tiger initial 3 in 1. I'm sure you'll find it useful.

Further....

Besides the Cyberhobby Tiger I DAK, are there any other DAK tigers available? Does the DML Initial come with a DAK option?

Guys
here's some pics of my Italeri tiger 1 done as a DAK machine using Academy indy links and the Royal Model detail set

There was an interesting article on converting the Italeri Tiger into a DAK version in FSM a while back.

Oooh....

Found an Academy Tiger I early inc full interior details... it has a DAK option, though for the moment it looks a bit advanced for me. Was on sale too. Oh well lots on my bench to finish yet.

AFV makes a real nice Tiger I Late also. They have recently or are about to release workable link tracks for the kit as well.

The academy kits with Interiors are great out of the box.

All the Tamiya Kits are real nice kits. They have released the initial version and a Afrika version as well.

Go with the DML kits. I have the intial tiger and the dak tiger. All I can say is that they are outstanding kits.

While there is a lot of choice in Tiger models, I think I'd have to "go with the flow" & recommend the new Dragon kits, especially as I'm currently working on the late one now. Most of the older kits (early Tamiya, Academy, Italaeri) have accuracy issues, chiefly in the turret, which should be asymmetric, but isn't in the older kits (there are lots of other defects, but it would be boring to list them). The DML kit scores high on the features, metal barrel, lots of PE, Gen 2 Wittmann figure, indy tracks, & it's all in the box, so even full price @ £23.99, it's a steal - you will not need anything else! The only problem is no Zimmerit, but then nor does anyone else!

SKurj, Tamiya includes an initial DAK Tiger in their Tiger line. It's in my "to do" pile in my workshop I never built it but I planned to build it as one of the first Tigers sent to the Leningrad area.

I have built the kit and thoroughly enjoyed it. There may be some inaccuraccies but to be honest, I can't spot them and I have all the new dragon kits. I had a grand time doing all that interior stuff. I left the hull top deck and the turret top unglued so I can view the interior. I found it easy to build as well. This is the first 35th scale kit I had built in 20 years (at the time) as I had been doing 48th scale tanks and airplanes and 24th scale exotic cars for the previous 20. JUst build it straight out of the box. You may want to purchase those Tamiya grill screens and pick up a metal gun tube any of the multitude of companies that make them now..

Thanks Steve,

While I intend for the Tigers (have a Tiger II to build as well) to basically be my most prized builds :-) I don't know if I will be displaying the interior..

I have only a few armor builds under my belt, and only 2 models ever with any sort of weathering on them. I have no doubt I can assemble the interior, the painting will be my shortcoming. There's a ton o pieces in that box! I will be looking at AM PE screens and possibly other bits and bobs, barrel and probably fruil tracks.

It would seem a waste to build it and then hide the interior though.... argghh, well a crusader to weather, a stug III to finish building and then the KT... mebbe by then I will feel more comfy painting that interior..

Dont let that put you off. The hull top and turret top have a fairly snug fit and dont need glueing. If you do the interior and are happy with it, leave the lids unglued. Otherwise glue it closed and it will be good enough to look through the hatches. On the plus side you can use the interior to practise mild weathering, washes, drybrushing and chips .... all of which will help in the future. For a kit with full interior, it has a good price. It will also give you good experience for open top vehicles and anything like halftracks and such

Regarding the Academy, it should be said that the interior is incomplete and inaccurate. I had a look at fixing it to the same standard as the outside, and I figured that almost every part would have to be replaced.
