I am about to start a King Tiger, Henschel Turret of ss 501 (#334 Ardennes)
Would camo have been applied from the factory to the lower hull sides (behind the wheels?) If not... what colour would these areas be? red oxide or the dark yellow?
Can anyone suggest a colour mix for Tamiya for Red Oxide?
Thanks

Hi sKurj ...I have only one picture of 334 and it seems to be one of the earlier KT's without the ambush scheme and was probably painted Dark yellow as a base color so,I'd go with yellow for the lower hull but with dust and dirt and all the side skirts in place it doesn't really show .

I can't say as I have ever seen camo applied to this area on a tank, but I haven't seen everything. I would go with the factory yellow. Now as a modern tanker, I do remember when we changed from olive drab to cammo on our M60a1's that w did do a little bit on the lower hull and we hit a few of the roadwheels as well. With the side skirts covering the sides I would skip the lower hull and hit a few road wheels with your cammo colors.

I really doubt they would have painted camo on anything that doesn't show after attaching roadwheels and skirts. In fact I doubt that camo would even be done before those things were in place. The only time I've seen camo behind roadwheels is on things such as M60 or Pz III, IV where you have large areas of hull visible between the roadwheels and the return run.

Thanks guys
The only picture of 334 that I have is a frontal shot (after it had been disabled)
Can't tell if it had any camo on it at all, but I did notice no Zimmerit which is a bonus for me as I have never done ZImm before.
I say all this not knowing how reliable the source is... The 'King Tiger" Vol. II Schiffer Miltary History by Wolfgang Schneider Pg 42. The ID # of the tank is not visible.
