I'd love to model a Somali Techincal. Really neat looking vehicles with no end to the varieties and various paint schemes.

Many of the Technicals I have see appear to use a Toyota pick-up for the base chasis.

What choices would I have for building a 1/35 Technical? Any modern trucks in this scale?

What weapons would be used. I'm assuming anything they could find. Soviet made MG's or recoilless guns maybe?

Appreciate any help.

Monogram has/had a 1/32 snap Toyota 4WD truck and a few other light trucks such as a VW pickup, Chevy Luv pickup, 80's Bronco w/o rear roof section, and a few CJ model jeeps as well. These would work. They are pretty well detailed and can be added to and modified easily. I know there has been a discussion about 1/32 scale autos being too big for 1/35 armor and figures. I don't think the difference is that great and have used 1/32 autos in my dios for years with great success.

Also, here is a link to a Technical made out of a Land Rover.

Any idea who might carry the mMonogram Toyota? Sounds like it would be perfect for what I'd like to do!

I had seen that Land Rover conversion before and like it. I wonder where the recoilless is from?

It could be the Skybow Recoiless rifle. It is very nice and is sold seperatley. I am also going to use the Revel/Germany Land Rover too for my Black Hawk Down dio.

One of my closest friend was a 1st lieutenant in the ADA during Desert Storm. He told me that when he arrived in country, his platoon was issued four toyota trucks and about twenty stingers apiece and given free roam to go out and find bad guys. He said they had a rack on the back like you see on some commercial trucks today, like a plumbing truck or fix-it guy. He didn't shoot any iraqi planes down, the air force got to them long before the got within his range, and he also had the dubious distinction of being one of the few commanders who had a soldier in his command die. Nothing heroic, the guy stepped on a land mine while souvenir hunting, something he had been forbidden from doing.

I know, I digress too easily. Perhaps the first part of my shpeal could be of some use to you.

Over on M-L Chris Mrosko ( I think ) built one of these jeeps. Looked pretty cool, the paint job was good.

If anyone has a current source for any of these 1/32 vehicles I'd be interested as well!! I know they existed...I just haven't been able to find 'em!

Thanks.

You can still find them at some hobby shops. Revell-Monogram no longer lists them in their catalog.

Did he bring back any snap shots from this? Sounds like an amazing time.

Check for the usage of these vehicles during the Oct. 1993 raid, while they appear in the movie a Ranger who was there says they were not in the city at that point.

Not sure I follow you Nate. Are you refering to the Black Sea (Black Hawk Down) battle?

I've read the Bowden book and Technicals are mentioned. According to most things I've read, these were there long before the Americans got there and still are cruising today...

Do you mean that they weren't encountered during the Black Sea battle?
