On top of this airbrush is a small knurled thumbwheel. What is it used for?. Ive spun it around several times while painting and it does nothing

Johnny,
That is the fine line adjustment. It is used to regulate the amount of paint when the trigger is depressed. Once set, it can help to maintain the consistency of a line when spraying since it maintains a set stop for the trigger.
