Hi Guys:

I'm new to this page and I was wondering if someone could help me out. I just got a Tamiya 1/25 Chieftan. The kit # is DTW108. It says 2000 Made In Japan. It is stamped with 1969. I don't think they ever re-issued this kit. It has an interesting R/C unit and has individual tracks. The box is opened but mint save for one tiny hole on the front. All parts are still in bags and all the R/C stuff and tracks etc. are sealed.

My question is does anyone have any idea what this kit might be worth?

Thanks
BigT

Hmmm...Tamiya often re-releases its 1/25 Centurion kit, but like you, I don't believe they have ever re-released their old 1/25 Chieftain kit. Centurions are actually on the shelves now, here in Japan (original release, as stamped inside the hull, was 1972). The only date listed on the box of the kit I bought last year is "Tamiya 1973."

I believe a company called Toy Star (or something similar) sold a pirated copy of the Tamiya Chieftain kit, but I've never actually seen one.

There are a few genuine Tamiya Chieftain kits at several LHSs in my area, with prices ranging from 28,000 to 35,000 yen ($245 to $307 USD). Quite the collector's item, if it's the genuine Tamiya article!

Thanks Brian:

I am having serious guilt pangs. I purchased four kits, this one included for $40 Canadian. I honestly didn't know it was so valuable. I also got a 1/18 Tamiya McLaren M8A from 1969! I can't get in touch with the person I bought it from. If I do sell it my wife says I should give some to charity...Kharma and all that!

It definitely looks to be the genuine article. I can't find the date stamp. On the bottom of the hull is a stamp that says Tamiya-Mokei Plastic Model Co. Made In Japan.

Thanks Again,

BigT

I didn't realise that they were so expensive Shado. I have had several opportunities to buy one around here for about $60. The tank just never appealed to me so I always passed it up. I might have to re-think this one!

Yeah, the ones I've seen in shops here in Japan have all been very expensive! I've been wanting to build the 1/25 Chieftain for a while, now...but not quite enough to pay that much!

Hey Shado,

Ever see any of the old 1/21 scale Tamiya kits over there? I got my hands on a couple of them a few years ago(Stug & PzIV I believe). I wasen't impressed with the kits at all so I decided to sell them on E-bay. Suffice to say they returned an "inflated" value on my initial investment. One of them went to Japan where apparently they are in high demand.

Barv,

I'll keep an eye out for one over here for you. There is a hobby shop not far from my house that recently had one. I'll see if he still has it.

I remember buying one in 1976 and it cost me about £18.99, which was an awful lot of money then.
I built it and it went like a formula one car, unfortunately my mum gave it to one of her friends child so I lost it.

Hi

ok The Tamiya Centurion is a great kit and all but for 1.5mm wrong between 2 & third road wheels ( to short) this is the most accurate Centurion at this moment in time. but not for long.

ok Chieftain only have this to say it is wrong, in many ways, can not even use it for connversion even. the list of things wrong is endless. reason i know this i had a 1/25 and i was going to build a AVRE but when i found out i had to scratch build everything i decided to bin it.

dont get me wrong it is useable but becaus ei know the vehicle etc i would be expected to be corect.

hope this helps
ossie

cant wait for the AFV Centurion !!!! i have know about this for a very long time.
