So what do you usually focus on first?
Does a diorama idea/concept drive the purchasing of kits or
does a stash of kits drive a diorama idea?
Or are you more like me - it just depends on the way a photo or kit strikes me.

I picked the 2nd choice, that the kits were first, but that is just because of the way I buy things. I tend to be a collector, so I buy kits that will finish up that collection.
Once I get the kits I will then be inspired by a photo, movie, something like that, as to what I want to do with the kits.

I select the idea or diorama concept first. But
that wasn't always the case when I was
strictly an aircraft kit builder. Then I purchased
the new released kits that interested me in
the WWII single engine fighter genré.

I tend to look at the kits on my shelves and go from there. Sometimes, I'll go and buy a specific kit. I usually consider the diorama issues afterwards.

Scene and theme first. Then rack everything in to satisfy it.Vehicles used are pretty flexible.troops a little less so,especially allied ww2 because of limited choices.Getting better on that, though .Size of display can become a major factor.
cheers!

For me its the kits, most of the time, I like to get most off the shelf and built, then put them in a dio/vignette so I can start on new ones :-)

Roll of the dice for me...
The last diorama I completed started when I picked up a photoetch set because it was on sale. I didn't have the kit it was for but intended to eventually. A month later, I saw the kit on the shelf at a local hobby shop and the price wasn't too bad. Well, I guess you can see how this story is going to end...
Generally, my dioramas start in a more conventional manner but it is a hobby and as such, I follow no rules.

Even though i havent yet created a diorama, ive read that starting with the base and then working from there is best as you would know how to utilise all the space on it as oppose to thinking about the kit and then figure out how to fill up the space. Im sure this is all based on personal preference in the end.

I hardly ever stash. I buy as I need for a project although in in 2006 I have three projects going at the same time for the first time ever.

Very nice poll... Well most people that know me, can tell you for sure that In 90% of the cases I built from pictures or at least use it as reference or inspiration.
As we speak.... I have found quite some Gems again.

My ideas for dios start at the hobby shop. As I'm looking over the kits I kinda see what will work well with each other. Unless its a special aircraft that I absolutely love, like the A-10 or Tomcat for example, something along those lines that I just can't live without having one in my collection, the box art is on a model is really what stimulates all the emotion for me to purchase the kit that lies inside.

for me, it is always the concept... i never buy the kits until i have all the details mapped out in my head and know exactly what i need.
also, it gives me time to save up me pocket money so i can afford to buy the stuf!! hehehe

I just buy a model that looks good or is at the right price , then look on this website and other model sites at the same model and the diorama's and interpurate my own model for a dio.

I really think it was the egg that came first.
