Hi Guys. I started ItaleriŽs water truck tonight. Ive got the Eduard PE set to dress it up a bit. Theres a box on the left side, thats modelled closed. Anybody have an idea what this is for? Is it a pump house?
Ive found quite a few reference images of the outside of CCKW 353 models but nothing of what is inside this box or indeed the back doors on the tank part. If anybody has some reference images of these, I would appreciate it very much, if I could see them. Any other tips orhelp would also go down a treat! Thanks in advance!

Frank the scans from the TM in JRatz's album are the only ones I have seen of the interior of these boxes.
The kit comes up well with a little bit of care.
Cheers
Cliff.

Thanks very much Chad for the tip. Much appreciated. Thanks to John as well!
I was still hopeful of getting a picture of the pump, but it cant be easy, if Cliff hasnŽt even seen them.
Looks like IŽll just have to keep it closed then!
Ive seen some images of rows of jerry cans built up on the back wheel arches. Is this common? Just wanna add something to make it a little different! Thanks again guys for your fast answers! IŽll show some pics later in the week ... have a few items to photograph, and dont have much time just now.

Although this is a soft top version, it shows the row of jerry cans. Would this be the same on both sides?
Another curious picture ... no pump unit!

Frank:
I have one picture of the pump, but none of the little engine that drives it. I imagine it is covered by a separate TM. I'll post the pump picture to my Gallery later this weekend. I think you can fake it pretty well from the schematic & the picture.
I don't know about the hardtop with no pump; at first I thought the negative might have been reversed but I can see by the lettering it has not.
Other tidbit, water tankers had no winch -- don't know if Italeri kit has one or not ...

The Italeri water tank kit does not have the winch John and please never say never as water tankers did not have the MG mount either and yet some were fitted with it. :-)

Thanks very much John. Appreciate the help. Thanks also to Chad and Cliff for yer input. IŽll post some images nearer next weekend. Got the tank, wheels and most of the chasis stages finished as of now.
The Eduard PE grill looks a bit scary ... IŽll give it a go, and if it turns out OK - - IŽll use it, ortherwise IŽll just make do with the plastic version!

As a hint here Frank I used the plastic ones with all 6 of my Eduard GMC water tanker PE sets.
But the one Aber PE set for the open topped GMC I have used I did the PE grill.
Just goes to show which one is the better PE set doesn't it?
Cheers
Cliff
PS> Aber does two sets. One for the Tamiya open cab GMC and one for the closed cab GMC. Both for cargo versions but the closed cab set will do the re-released Italeri closed cab cargo truck.

Here's the pump picture, not much to go on, I am afraid ...
'Roo:
The Army TM says Water Trucks were not produced with the winch. I doubt there were any added in the field, but it is always possible ...
FWIW, I like the Aber PE set over thye Eduard set, although both have their share of unnecesary parts and flaws in the instructions where they fail to point out proper selection/usage of items ...

John the army manuel says a lot of things but when it came to the crunch it wasn't always followed. With truck production back then it does not always follow that they they were all winchless and I don't mean field mods either. If the only chassis availiable for an order had a winch then that is what would be supplied.
They were not meant to have MG mounts either but some did.

A few years ago there was an article in the MVPA (Military Vehicle Preservation Association) from a US soldier who drove 6 x 6 trucks. Before depolying to Normandy his unit was issued brand new trucks, some with closed cabs. They prefered the open cabs, so switched all the closed cabs for the open cabs. There were some good pictures of the swap in process. As I recall, they also swapped data plates! Imagine the trouble this may have caused during a restoration years later.
