Hello folks,

i have to call all the PAK40-enthusiasts on a basic, but specific question.

I just assume, that many people have already seen my photo feature on the Eastern Front photo-album. There are various pics of PAK40s. My current projekt will feature a PAK 40 based on one of these pics.

Actually there are two (three) PAK40-kits worth considerung on the market right now:
- DML 6249 PAK40 with Herr gun crew
- DML 6250 PAK40 late type with Fallschirmjägers, Anzio
- AFV Club 35071 PAK 40

The Tamiya PAK40 is very old so I will skip it. Due to a comparision review on Perth Military Modelling DML 6249 is out because of very deep inaccuracies in scale.

DML 6250 offers you far more options and goodies (brass ammo, ammo boxes, worn tires and three types of tires) than the AFV Club kit. Since the DML-kit contains the disc wheels, that don't come with the AFV-club and I need for the actual project, so I decided on the DML-kit.

So after all that babbling up to my basic question:

What are the main differences between an early, (mid) and late type PAK 40?

One answer I had already given:
- The wheels:
Due to the weather conditions in Russia especially during the mud seasons the germans recognized, that guns with spoked wheels are far easier to handle than the ones with disc wheels.

Another point maybe the nose of the gun cradle (don't know how it is called in english). I discovered three different types of that nose:

Any comments on that one?
Unfortunatly the nose I need is not included in DML6250. Only in the AFV and DML6249 kit...

There are also various types of muzzle breaks, but which one is associated with which version?

I'm looking forward for your ansers

yes stavka, this was one of my questions, too. the background of the wheels were already mentioned, but thx for your comment on the lesser raw material; it sounds reasonable.

so, where are all the specialists out there. here are questions that need answering

I had no idea that the Tamiya PAK 40 was so poor. :_

I just recently bought it just to have a go at something while waiting to buy paints and other things for my 251. Im going to purchase the AFC PAK so I can have a good, accurate version. Ive had to do some considerable cleanup on the parts for the Tamiya and Ive even tried to add some extra detail to this less than stellar kit. Polishing a piece of poo so to speak :-)
