This pic has an interesting growth on the side of the M1A1. Is it some sort of bad rash or looks like some sort of fuel bladder. I dunno much about US equip so any help most welcome.

You're right it's a FLEXCEL fuel bladder . You'll find some info and pics in this recent Armorama thread :

I built one! (two Actually) Check out my gallery. Very easy to make out of lead foil.
