I picked up a small resin PzKpfw IV turret bunker. Where were these used and which Ausf. turrets were used? Which gun?

Interesting. I thought that only obsolete turrets ( or rather turrets from obsolete tanks) such as the Char B were used for this purpose. The only exeption being the Panther turret. But the Panther had a more effective gun. The Panzer IV being continualy upgraded and uparmoured untill the end of the war didn't strike me as a turret that would be used for this purpose. But if it was I'd like to learn more details.

Cheers

Yes, the turrets were used on armoured trains, and would you believe it, there seems to have been at least one on Omaha Beach...

look here , and scroll down to WN68.
No pictures alas, but mention none the less. As to which gun, I would guess the short 75mm gun, as they were for close support and by 1944 more or less obsolete as the Pzr IV had by then be up armed with the long 75mm. I'll have another look later, but I've got to go home now..

This was made by Tiger Productions Diorama Products, item #72043, Medium Bunker (with Pz IV turret).

No photo of the dio on their site: http://www.tigerdio.com/1_72_scale.htm, but the bunker set looks like an Atlantic Wall-type bunker with a short barreled resin PzKpfw IV turret.

I do not like the look of the resin turret and was wondering which kit I should swipe a turret from. I do have a Revell late PzKpfw IV Ausf. J that I plan on using a CMK Bergepanzer conversion on so that leaves me a pretty good turret to use in place of the resin one.

This is a link to the Verlinden one in 1/35, but with a PzKpfw III turret. Very similar to the one I have.

Any turret up to and including the F1 would have the short barrel ( 7.5cm L/24) gun. The later versions ( D/E/F1) would be more likely as the earlier versions were only produced in small no's and long out of production. going with a Ausf. D turret would be a save bet unless specific information confirms otherwise.

Using the turret of a Ausf, J would not be easy if you want to build the Short barrel version, as the armoured recoil cover is different. The Ausf. D also has single turret doors, whilst the Ausf E and onwards have dubble turret doors. If you can get a Ausf. D in 76 scale, that would be easier.
You can't use the turret of the Ausf. J as is, as the Ausf. J production started in June 1944, and by that time the Atlantic wall would of course not have had any fortifications added. Well, not by the previous owners... .

I can't really help you on the small scale availability, as I hardly build in that scale. I have a CMK " Kugelblitz" conversion for the Pzr IV, and I'm looking on ebay for a cheap Airfix or Revell kit. i know the Revell one to be o.k., do you know what the Airfix one is like?

Airfix one is old and in the wrong scale (1/76) despite what the box says. I do have the Mirage PzKpfw IV Ausf C that I could use as well.

Thanks for the heads up on the Aifix kit Rob, I'll give that one a miss. As for using the Ausf. C turret, it's possible. Why only today in another post somebody posted some pictures regarding Normandy, and two of those showed an Ausf. C in early 1944 ( reportedly, picture is dificult to date). If an Ausf. C would have been damaged beyond repair the turret would not have been re-fitted on a new tank, so the use on a pill box is quite feasible. I have tried to find more detailed references, but no luck so far.

The Ausf C kit I have actually contains Normandy 1944 markings. Apparently the vehicle was still in use by the second line units that were stationed in France prior to D-Day.

That might just be this one then. Note the name ' Heidi ' on the drivers visor. No other markings seem present though, which unit are the kit markings for?

I did a review on the kit a while back: PzKpfw IV Ausf. C. The kit markings include those for a tank used by the 21st Panzer Division in Normandy 1944.
