As part of the repair package for U.S. Camouflage nets, there comes rolls of string, to repair the netting. I picked some up as it was being thrown out, and it works great. It's already the right color, and can be used to model rope, or even tow cables.

There are a ton of choices with thread in the sewing dept. of any craft store. There are plenty of thicknesses and colors. Anything in the tan to off white is just fine.

how thick should it be?
Thats like asking "how long is a piece of string?" Rope could come in any thickness, it would depend on what it's to be used for. As for a good source of rope, you could check out the model boat building section of a hobby shop. They'll have many diferent sizes intended for rigging.

what color would rope be tan?
That would depend on what the rope is made of (natural or man-made fibre), as well as its age.

I guess ship thread is fine for things on AFVs, what about rope like that used to rappel or climb. are tose camo or not .I know they're different as they're able to take the shock od decent. but would probably be to strechy for tying stuff.

Dental floss, dressmaking cotton, string, painted picture hanging wire, allsorts really. The trick is to avoid fine strands from showing and making it look 'hairy'. running it through super glue or something similar would probably solve that problem.

If you know anyone with access to medical supplies, nylon sutures make really good ropes.
