Undesided on what colour to paint the damaged zim?i was going to go with primer red then i saw some models with a grey colour.i guess the late Tigers had a primer red colour before the zimmerit was applyed.
or should i not paint it any colour and leave it with its base coat?
any help

Hello.
I'm sure i'll be corrected if i'm wrong.
I believe that in most cases that zimmerit was a factory applied coat which would have been applied after the base coat of red oxide primer.
If the damage to the zimmerit was old then the tank may have been repainted and so the damage would be the same colour as the rest of the tank. (obviously).
If the damage was fresh or no new camufladge had been applied then the dmage would go through to the base primer coat.
I'm unsure how 'corrosive' the zimmerit would be to the primmer. I have seen quite a few kits where the damage zimmerit is left at the primer coat.
Post some pictures of your kit so we can see the progress! - good luck!

In addition to Goose's answer here is my opinion.
1) If the damage is deep then we will definitely see some hint of metal (metallic gray or just pencil graphite color)
2) If its not too deep and new, then red primer
3) If its not too deep and old (no repaint) then it would be red primer w/c darkened due to environmental oxidation.
4) If its not too dep and old but repainted, then it would have the same color as the rest of the tank.
Just my two cents....
Cheers

Zimmerit was applied in 2 coats
If just the outer coat was damaged the coat below would be a grey colour (someone else posted previously that its maybe more beige)
