Anyone who has been to France, or one of our members that lives in the beautiful country just might be able to help me out here. Maybe :-)
I'm building a small French street section which includes a small building, maybe some sort of cafe, anyways, the real question is about the roof, shingles in particular. Did/ do the French use slate shingles for roofing? (this dio is for a ww2 diorama)
Also, does anyone have any close up pictures of where the edge of the roof is, next to the gutters? Side shots, any angle will do. I searched google, but surprisingly no promising results for me.
thankyou
all help is much appreciated

Hi Shain,
we used to cover roofs with any kind of material (thatch, flat stones, slates, tiles) depending of the area. Which area do you think of for your diorama ?
On the edge of the roof, the slates or whatever covers the roof will slightly jut out. There is underneath a wooden "junction" with the wall.

Good morning Shain,
Instead of providing you the links (because there are to much of them ) , be sure to look for the correct french and german word for the gutters. The rooftechnique is the same in both countries.
So look in Google pictures either for "gouttière" or "Dachrinne". This will give you plenty odf views to choose from.
Here is a site i used to see how slates are posed.
It's in german, but the pictures tell enough

Happy building

Eastern France I suppose, near the Netherlands.
This is pretty urban, in a small village, so I'm guessing most if it is stone work and not thatch.

You're correct, no thatch in that part of France.

Shain,
You are forgetting two whole countries here :-)
In fact, between eastern France and the Netherlands is Belgium and Luxembourg .
Cheers
