Tamiya has their own thinner, or you can use alcohol or glass cleaner.

When I was using this, water worked well, as did rubbing (isopropyl) alchohol.

Thanks guys. I just have a few colors that I like for painting figures and wanted to be sure of the correct thinner.

I use Tamiya Acrylic thinner. I figure that you can't go wrong with two of the same brand.

Tap water works just fine.....some say to buy distilled water.....I never have.......also a 99% Rubbing alcohol works well too to thin it..but use a 50/50 alcohol/water mix specially if you're airbrushing...and the alcohol also works very well to strip it if you make a mistake.

I have just used normal rubbing alcohol.....never had any problems yet.......
The only difference I have seen with using water or alcohol is that with alcohol it would dry a little faster, maybe with water instead it would dry a little differently? Make the paint look a little different?
Never heard of mixing a 50/50 solution of water/alcohol....what does this do?

Gunze Mr. Color Lacquer thinner. Don't knock it til you try it. It works good. Lays the stuff down real smooth. And full curing time is hours instead of days. I've also heard of Black Gold Automotive Lacquer thinner working real good as well. But I haven't tried it yet.
But if you want to keep it as non toxic as possible, I'd stick with Tamiya's own thinner (X-20). It gets the job done.

I have an Azrec airbrush and I find when I mix just with alcohol it dries too fast and blocks up the tip.....that's why I use a 50/50 mix with water.

Dioman,
I have the early model of that brush and they make tips especially for shooting acrylic paint. The needles are made of a nylon material that the paint doesn't seem to clog. I got a couple and love them. They even made them a different color so you can tell which one's which. I just wish I could remember what each color tip is for. Oh the joys of being over 40! #:-)

You must have a luckier aztek than I do....mine clogs terribly no matter what I do with acryics.....and the so-called acrylic tip is the worst one i have!!
I'm about to throw that brush out the window.

Yes....I also have the earlier model too.....I also have the tip for acrylics and that's the 1 that clogs up if I use straight paint/alcohol through it.
Being almost 40 myself I know what you mean by trying to remember what the tips are for......plus it seems they bring out the same tips but in different colours for different years.....I have a gray 1....which I think was for fine painting....and a torquise one that I think was for wide coverage.......they seem to be about the same to me though....and then as I said....I have the acrylic tip.....I remember they had a splatter tip too.........I'm not paying $14 Cdn for 1 when an old toothbrush works just fine for that effect....or not thinning your paint enough before you blow it.

for high quality painting I use Tamiya thinner. For making washes etc. I use water, or (rarely) alcohol..
The advantage of Tamiya is that it takes a little longer to dry.... Pure acrylics is dries too fast for this "younger older" guy..... I'm a slow painter...

The white high flow tip for acrylics has been redesigned by Aztek/Testors and should now work fine. I actually have never had any problems with it, unless I mix the paint with pure alcohol. Then it tends to 'gum up' after about 10 minutes. But if I use Tamiya thinner or the 50/50 mix of water and alcohol, it works like a charm. Maybe you should get a new white tip and try that one. It should work better....
