Hi guys ..finally started painting my DAK Tiger ..So far I started painting everything in Tamiya's Nato Black.... and then sprayed Tamiya's Panzer gray along with a lightened coat of Panzer Gray and Buff...the Next step will be to cover all this in my final green color which should be done by the end of this week..still have a few retouches to do but it's starting to come together ....
everything black....

Panzer gray added...

this is just the preliminary preshading effect so far...

added a heavy wash to the edges to help with the preshading for the green coat..

and that's where I've gotten to so far ...I'll post more pictures as it progresses ..

Gday Rick
It looks very German to me! This has to mean you're on the right track... :-) :-)
I will leave now and make room for experts in this field to air their views...
Like the idea of the heavy wash before the final colour. Knew, but never saw a pic to know in what amount this should/could be done...
Keep it going!
Cheers

P.S. what engine screens did you use??

Rick, Its looking very good so far I think I will give this technique of painting that you do a try on my Tiger I am working on. One question for you, the wash in the final pic is that acrylics? and was that with the lighter fluid? Keep the pics coming! Cheers Kevin

thanks for the comments guys ....
The build was pretty much trouble free ...I had to watch out at the front as the kity was a bit warped ..but after fighting a bit with the pieces everything went into place ...be careful of the turret roof it can sink down a bit when gluing it in place ...just have to be careful ...screens are in the kit ...
The wash is a burnt umber oil paint was mixed with lighter fluid ... I have gloss coated the sides of the turret to add the numbers before painting the green ..I'll mask them leaving the inside gray which is my interpretation of the different color of the numbers ...
John good eye you got there ...yes I did have an old OTM set hanging around along with an Aber set and a few other things ..I have a bad habit of picking and choosing things from different frets ...hey what can I say ..lol

Great work on the pre-shading. I have to say i never got pre shading to work for me but when it does work, i can see the results are fantastic.

Looking forward to seeing the final product.

Good step by step pics. Nicking up the road wheels is a nice touch. Keep us posted.

Hi Jeremy ...I think one of the tricks with preshading is to thin your paint a lot ....that way you can can have much more deviation in the color just by how many times you pass over one spot ...I usually thin my tamiya paints 30% paint to 70%thinner ...
Steve I've the North African terrain was very hard on the rubber tires and there were even reports of tigers being out of action by a lack of replacement wheels ,so I really gouged the rubber on the roadwheels....

Hi Bear,

Is this the DML DAK Tiger?

It is looking great. What green are you planning to paint it?

Hi Fred Rick... Yes this is the Cyberhobbies (DML) kit...It is a great kit ...As for the green I'm going to use ...I contacted Gerry Chestler who was a British vet from the Desert Campaign...I asked him what color green the Tigers were and he said that they were a very dark green,so I'm going to use a home made mix of Gunze's field grey and dark green for the base color..I do plan to make it quite dusty and weathered in the end .

And I thought painting rubber around Sherman wheels was a pain in the behind.

Hi Alan and Alex thanks for the comments ...Alan all the roadwheels were done free hand so it's not as bad as it looks .Any overspray will be dealt with later with a wash and the weathering ...yeah I know ..I'm lazy..lol :-)

Rick:

Great job there. A few words if you are interested:

Don't emphasise the 8 screws in the middle of the roof. In the early vehicles, you would be hard pressed even to find them.

Sand down the base flange of the cupola so it sits better in the roof ring. The joint should be almost invisible.

Ensure that the forward vision slit of the cupola is facing exactly forward. I don't know why, but people seem to get this wrong.

Rick..Great Job so far. I really like what i am seeing so far. I hate painting roadwheels..who would have thought to paint them all black first..I like it . Please keep us posted. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Hi David and Mary ...David ...would it be better to actually fill the screws in or just by not accenting them is that enough? Not quite sure what you mean about sanding down the flange,if you could explain that a bit more ....I'll check my references as well ...and yes I knew about that slit ...It was already noted .Mary the nato black as a base color really can help speed up the wheel painting ...ya know me anything to make life easier .... :-)
