Hello all,
I'm currently working on DML's 251/21 "Drilling" kit and ran into something that's perplexing me a bit. I'm wondering about the assembly and location of the part in the photo below. Basically, the blue arrow shows the kit plastic part (a polygon shaped piece with holes in it - not sure what it really is), but it's hard to tell where it actually goes other than a general location.
Also, there's a PE option in the kit for this part (green arrow). There's two of them, but it looks like there's narrow fold marks on the left and right sides. Do you fold them both and glue them together for a 3D shape? Or do they lay flat?
Any ideas? I don't have any reference material on hand and my photo searches have come up empty.
Thanks!
- Frank

Could be a frame piece. As to the shape of the PE, match it up with the plastic piece and see how it shapes out. By the way the directions show it, it is glued flat to the inside of the large piece

Hi, as I know the wehicle Sd.Kfz 251, the parts shown in the photo ( I mean photoetched parts) should be the back side of drivers and commanders seats! The assembly drawing is probably wrong! Look for some references to photoetched parts from EDUARD to this wehicle.

I've stayed out of this one until now, mostly because for a long time I've pondered these parts. As far as I can tell from everything I've read, it's some sort of map case or holder. It's sometimes affixed to the side wall of the hull just behind the driver's station, sometimes, one on each side, although Eduard instructions show them fixed to the back of the drivers and co-drivers seats, something I haven't seen anywhere, so I'd be very interested to see where Eduard get their references from. Since I can't prove what they are, and because they're not present in most 251's I've seen, I've left them off 251's I've built.

I think Teacher's onto something with this one. Given it's final location, it's not going to be exactly highly visible, especially once the gun pedestal is installed.
Thanks all for the replies.
Kaca - DML provides PE spring backs for the seats, but it does look similar to to other seat backs I've seen before.

I had thought they were additional seat back armor.
There is a pic in the Rossagraph 251 in Polish Museum book and I think James Tainton wrote about it in his Uber-build over or Planet armor, but that thread (about the 251/9 is like 21 pages long and I'm not sure I can surf that much here at work)
I'll check my Rosagraph book tonight.
EDIT:
here is the link to the 20 page James T build, http://www.planetarmor.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=537

Could be I suppose, but it's difficult to see what good additional armour with dirty great big holes in would be?

MLD & Stuckfingers - thanks for the links.
I checked out the one at Planet Armor and here's exactly where he discusses the parts as seat back armor along with a photo from the real thing:
251 Build
Following the logic, the PE parts from DML do have additional tabs on them. If you can make it out from my photo, there's the attachment point plus a thicker tab that can be bent for the seat attachment point.
I wonder if these were something that could be installed and removed at will? That would explain why DML suggests sticking them to the wall of the interior.
I just might to stick 'em the seats after all!
Thanks all!
