I am reading an article by John Tapsell in the May 05 edition of MIS. He converts a Tamiya Humvee into a Special Forces Dumvee version. In it he uses plastic card to do the all the conversation work. i am not sure what he means when he says that the card he uses, is for example, 10 x 250thou .30 x 250, 10 x60, 10 x 80 thou. I know this is the gauge of thickness of the card but where can you get this type of card and what thickness do you ask for when ordering. in this scale (1:35) 50mm thick plate would be less than 1.5mm thick card

I think he means sheet styrene. It comes in all thicknesses. Check out Plasrtuct's or Evergreen's websites for ordering info.

Plastic card is just styrene sheets. They come in packs of different sizes and also variety packs. Most hobby shops carry them.

Cookie,
you need sheet plastic and strip plastic. Evergreen make a comprehensive range of products
Here are the main thicknesses in Imperial (thou) with metric in brackets:
80thou (2.0mm)
60thou (1.5mm)
40thou (1.0mm)
30thou (0.75mm)
20thou (0.50mm)
15thou (0.4mm)
10thou (0.25mm)
5thou (0.13mm)
For any different sizes just laminate them together to achieve the required thickness.
Also think about getting some other shapes 'L' ; '[' and RSJ shapes work well at the right size for angle irons, sand channels etc.
Architectural models also use similar materials
good luck
Tom
EDIT: 10 x 250 and similar probably refer to plastic strip.

You may not need it for this project, but a great source for .060 styrene is yard sale signs and the like. Sometimes you can get very large sheets for half a buck-way less than the Evergreen. I used to use it when I was poor, but now only use it when I don't feel like making the drive to the LHS.
