Its been a while since I have posted any work in the forums. So..i thought i would post and let you know whats going on in my neck of the woods.

A while back, Jackhammer81(kevin) and I started talking with thebear(rick). We in the process of communicating thought it would be cool to do a mini-group build of Panther G tanks. Just doing something for fun and something to keep each other motivated. Kevin and I decided for our Panther G's , we would do a diorama base that would feature a railroad track theme. During further talks with Rick..we discovered that it was his birthday coming up, so Kevin and I thougth it would be nice to make him a diorama base for his Panther, that would go along with our theme as well.

Sooo..here are some photos of the progress that we have made so far on the base.

This is the beginning ..we started with a basic picture frame, then used pink insulation foam to build up the basic ground levels.

This is a pic with the Tamiya basic hull showing the tank positioning on the base.

This is a pic after the laying of the Aves Clayshay and a dusting of fine sand to give the groundwork texture. Also tank track impressions have been made, as have the railroad tracks been put into place.

These pics portray the base after we have begun to paint the groundwork. First we started with a brown oxide craft paint that was painted over the entire base, followed by a thinned wash of trail tan acyrilic craft paint.

Next..we mixed two diffrent kinds of ballast from woodland scenics. Tacky white glue was applied in between and around the railroad ties, the ballast was then sprinkled on creating the base layer of ballast. At this time was also rubbed with an HB graphite pencil to create a mettalic sheen of warn metal.

The tracks are from DML, the ties were finished in Tamiya red brown, then raw umber oils were brushed over the ties, and then removed with a stiff brush after about a half hours time. The rails and metal parts of the ties, were first painted with MM burnt iron metallizer, then dry brushed with MM burnt metal metallizer. These were followed by a light application of old rust pigments.

Next steps will include more ballast, and the vegatation (grasses, etc). Will keep you posted. All comments welcome.

It's really looking good. Can't wait to see it with vegetation on it. What brand of craft paints did you use for the ground?

Cheers,

I like it, with one reservation. The balast pile should be much deeper.

Thanks everyone for the comments.

Salvo..the craft paints that we use are just basic craft paint that can be found in Wal-Mart. The particular brands that we used were Delta Cerama Coat.

Mary, nice work, the groundwork turned out quite nice, oh man there goes that over age 50 redundency thing.
Do you realise I just typed " Mary that's nice it turned out nice "
Kevin is right I need that skype thing to talk to you guys, cause I can't type worth shineola.
Anyway nice job I do alot of woodwork, my house is full of woodwork , [ see there it goes again ] I love the frame you placed the build in .
If the build turns out a nice matte finish make sure you use a good glossy spar finish on the frame and you would be surprised how well the overall effect is.
I need my medicine and my nap now the kids are chasing the dog with a bandanna and she don't want any part of it ..... there is no peace in this house tonight !!!

Mary -

As always, another masterpiece in the works from you and Kevin. I'm watching this one develop with great interest. Thought of a similar approach, but coming out of a tree line onto tracks. Keep up the outstanding work and us posted.

Very nice positioning of the tracks Mary. The coloring of the groundwork is subtle but contrasting enough to give it depth.

Rick is one lucky guy to have friends like you and Kevin.

Mary i think the base looks very good so far, when you add a little vegatation to it it should look great, it should make a very nice birthday present. You know i think we all have a birthday coming up soon, looks like you will need a lot more supplies. :-)

Hi Everyone, I thought i would post an update on Rick's base. As you can see in the Pics we have started doing the grasses, First we made a line of sorts with grass along the railbed and then added more ballast. After that it recieved a mix of bright spring static grass and some dormant colored static grass. This was followed up with Noch WildGrass in the light green color. As this will be set in the middle of April the grass will have to receive a haircut. The weeds will not be alone for long after the haircut the base will recieve more weeds, bushes/saplings and even some wildflowers. Well here are the pics. Thanks for looking.

Oh and that King Tiger wont be there long it just shows vehicle placement, Rick will have a Super detailed Panther G late in its place. Cheers Kevin

Mary and Kevin,
That looks great, love the ground. I always forget about using the pink foam for building up the base. I'm going to have to remember that when I start my Tiger dio. Tracks look right and the grass looks real, I'm going to need to score some of that. Great job and looking forward to seeing it and yours (Kev's) finished.

Very nice.
I want to see hat Panther if you say it is super detailled

You have to add some flowers if it is done. That would be cool.
