Here is a Diorama i just finished up for a customer. It depicts a German Elefant in a street setting fighting in 1944 with some infantry support.

The Elefant kit is the old Italeri/Testors kit build OOB. Nothing fancy at all and I was very pleased with the basic kit. I added the commanders periscopes from square evergreen stock, replaced the tow cables with wire and scrap box ends, gave it a fire extinguisher on the fender, and added a better shovel. I also removed the left front fender to add some slight damage to the vehicle, but not too much as the customer did not want it to be too beaten.

Finally, this was supposed to be a ACTION! scene, so I had to finally break down and build a real diorama. I added two Tamiya German Infantry, part of the Italeri park gate, and scratchbuild the foundation of a destroyed second section to give it that "city under fire" look. Groundwork was sanded mortar mixed with white glue. I added static grass, some plants tips from outside my house, and finally some spent shell casings to finish it off. The figures were "pinned" so they could be removed from the dio for shipment but still placed on it solid.

Overall I am pleased with the dio, and so was the customer. I am now working on a dio of a Ferdinand (DML) just before Kursk...should be very interesting.

Jacques:

Nice Elefant. Dio is nice. Great paint job. Only thing I can think of is the lack of Zimmerit. I thought all Elefants had zim but the Ferdinands didnt. I could be wrong. I have this exact kit at home. Fun and easy kit.

Keep it up

Very nice Dio. Great base.
You took a bold layout seting by keeping it paralel to the base. Breaking the rules??. :-) :-) I like the ground work also.

Not really a bold move...that was all the space I was allowed to work with.

As for Zimmerite, yes, they all probably had it on them in 1944, but:

1. The customer did not want to pay extra just for that (in his eyes) minor detail so

2. This is one that lost all its Zimmerite running around. :-)

That is the bummer part of the business, having to do things that are not right because the customer wants it another way. Sigh.

Really great work! I like the infantry and the fact that the elefant isn't that beat up. Where did you get the gate from? Is it scratch?

Very nice Elefant. Over all a very nice paintjob. Difficult to really see the figures, but from what I can see, they look pretty good. The old Italeri park gate looks pretty good too.
I have no doubt, your customer will be pleased.

Thanks guys.

As noted, the park gate is from Italeri...they re-issue it from time to time, and testors put it under their label many years ago...both are still easy to find on eBay at least, as well as at shows.

as for the pictures sizes...yeah, I have to find a better way to post...I think I try to show too many pictures and thus have to limit file size...gotta stop buying models for a month and get an A-guard membership!
