Hi all,
I finaly got the base for this beast finished, and today I handed it to the owner. I happy to say that he was well pleased with it.. . So much I think he's commissioned another one on the spot, but with out the trailer, recovering a tank from a ditch or such.. yippeee.
Some of the in progress story can be followed here , but here are some of the finished photo's. I can't believe I cut the front of the the wagon...
Cheers
Henk

Nice pose,Henk.
I think the towing cable would be a darker color, like well maintained cable.maybe a wash of thinned gunmetal would do it?
What was the damage to the Sherman which required a transport on the DW?If the track was removed near the spot of recovery,it would be an interesting detail to have the shed track on the ground,or coiled nearby ready to be recovered too.

That's a great scene. I've been wanting to do something similar.

Very nice weathering. Were the Germans aiming at the white star? Or is that something else?

Thanks guys,
Carl,
The cable has been washed with a rust and an oily wash, but the picture shows it a bit shiny..
My poor photo's have managed to not only cut the front of the wagon, but also the rear of the base . You can't see the damaged roadwheel and blast crater a bit back, but you can see it missing from the front of the Sherman. It had lost the roadwheel through a mine, and after being immobilised it was used by an 88 for target practice... 18Bravo correctly spotted the hit on the star. there's another hit near it, and a ricochey (sp) of the turret (just above the shell port). As to your suggestion of thrown track etc nearby, budget, time and requirements didn't call for a very detailed diorama, but just an attractive display of the DW. He owns one for real, and that's why he want's me to do another one. Now that I've met him, and we will discuss the next one before I start, I'll be sure to make more work of the base. I suggested something along the lines of the DW dragging a Sherman out of a ditch, down a bank, with the rear tyres half way in the mud, and the front wheels lifted up under the strain and weight of the Sherman. He liked that...
I'm looking forward to do another one Keenan, but it will be a while before I start on the next one.
Alan, it's not a cheap kit, but it's worth every penny. Go for it. It would be a perfect match for your Shermans.
Cheers
Henk
Another photo showing the wheel just visible to the rear. This was also the first time I used Klear to apply the decals, and what a revelation that was... I was always scared sh**less to add floor polish all over my finished model, but Mal (Holdfast) showed me how to do it last year. Finaly picked up the courage...
And a clearer shot of the damage to the Sherman.. Those dastardly German guncrews...
Cheers

Dank je wel John, het was the bedoeling om deze niet al te zwaar te 'weatheren', maar de volgende wordt hopelijk wel wat modderiger...

Gday Henk
Has come up well, and I'm glad your client is happy.
Het ontbrekende wegwiel; what happens to the remaining one in the way of support? I guess the other side of the tank being ok would mean it would not tip...
Remember the pic I posted showing the missing wheel? I think that because the arm was still there they had to support it with the chain as in that pic, so it would not dig into the ground... Forgive me, I'm banging on now
:-)
Looks great
Cheers

Hi Bradley,
Thanks, and your Dutch is coming on well ( what's up with that?) . Yeah, that arm is one of those little things that 'those in the know' will spot, and I could have added a chain or something like in your pic. But as it is this was not meant to be a 100% accurate diorama, but an attractive display of the DW with a Sherman we'll live with that. That's one reason it's only lightly weathered. I have chatted with him, and he agrees that on the next one I can go all out, mud, dirt and scrapes... As for the positioning and support, the picture doesn't show it to good, but with the tracks in place on the other side, the Sherman is leaning over to the left a bit, and the display does give a sence of the Sherman being dragged up the skids/ramps with some effort...
Cheers Dan,
Yes, it is the Tamiya kit. One of their best I would say, and one which I will be doing again in the future.
Hello Andy,
Thanks, and I will.. That waterfilled ditch is an excellent idea, it also means I can add a few figures and get away with only painting their top halves.. :-) .
Cheers
