Am building a Panther Ausf G late and i want to add 3 or 4 steel wheels just to try and make it look like the panther has been repaired for a last ditch effort.
but i only have late tiger road wheels which are a little bit smaller, does that matter?

any help as i have no clue what so ever

many thanks

The steel wheels found on the Panther G were different from that of the Tiger.

EDIT : I am wrong. According to Germany's PANTHER TANK The Quest For Combat Supremacy by Thomas L. Jentz (Schiffer pub.) The roadwheels are the same used by the late Tiger and Tiger II's. Having said that, there IS a difference in the appearance of the "hubs?" though you will have to modify those.

Karl -

By no means a Panther expert, but I thought the Panther G Late that had the steel road wheels used the ones that were used on the Tiger II, King Tiger. I like the idea though and think that if this actually is the case, it would be feasible. Maybe 'the_bear', 'Kelley', or others more knowledgeable can help out.

I seem to remember that the Tamiya G came with the choice of either rubber rimmed or steel wheels, from when I built one some years ago. If so maybe somebody could help you.

It also had the bonus night fighting Kit.

Just like to say Thanks for the replys

Tamiya produce a couple of late panther Gs,steel wheel version, and rubber road wheel version plus one with the choice of both wheels.

this is the kit i have.

i asked this question as i know the germans were trying all sorts to stop the allies advancing on berlin so i thought there might of been some mocked up tanks as i know they were very low on armored vehicles.
Just trying to be a bit creative :-)

cheers

Hi Karl ...As others have said the steel wheels were the same but the middle has to be reworked ...The ones in the Tamiya kit are too big and the only other option would be the Dragon kit and I haven't studied them but apparently the hub detail is not quite right either...Nothing a little scratchbuilding can't fix.... As for adding a few steel wheels I wouldn't do that other than changing the last wheel on both sides which was done on a few of the last Panthers..but if you do that you need to remove the anti aircraft rail and add foliage loops to the turret sides...Also the Tamiya exhausts are too small and should be replaced with the dragon ones.. There would also be fewer bolts holding the engine compartement cover...and might have the small return roller behind the sprocket replaved with a skid..
On another note if you build a steel wheeled Panther one day I have a picture of one of the steel wheels being replaced by a regular wheel..

have fun with your project ...

Rick
(guess what I'm building right now ..lol)
