I've spent some time looking for information on washes made using artist oils.
I could not find a good description.
The latest article on washes techniques mentions water soluble oils but not artist oils.

So I wanted to ask if anybody had suggestions on the best techniques for washes using artist oils, I heard there are good.
Are they better than enamel?
Do I use mineral spirit? turpentine oil?

I use artist oils, using higher quality gets you a finer pigment which will give a better effect.
I take a dab out of the tube with a toothpick and and enough regular hardware store paint thinner to allow it to flow very freely. The ratio is about 1 part paint to 9 parts thinner, but that's just a guess since i do it by eye and add more thinner or paint if the mixture doesn't look right.

Thanks for the tip!
It looks like it is the exact same technique than with enamels...

I heard it is not good to use normal paint thinner, that it can leave nasty shiny marks on the model.
I use it for my enamel washes, and it is true that sometimes I get those marks, but I just remove them by adding a flat coat...

Is it more likely to happen with oil? I heard that it is better to use rectified turpentine, but that's hard to find!!!

I use odorless mineral spirits as thinner for oil wash. Before applying the wash just make sure that the surface already has a coat of gloss.

Hope this helps

I use the exact same method as arvin but cant find the odorless version of mineral spirits so it does stink up the room quite a bit.

I would advise that you have a bit of a play on some old plastic for this but on a gloss coat, the wash seems to 'slide' into those gaps with ease. It almost seems like its got a life of its own, only sticking to the gaps and not spreading to the wide open spaces.

These days i dare not complete my builds without an oil wash.

Good Luck!

Hi Jazza,

Probably some art studio/shop in your area carries the brand Talens (odorless mineral spirits)

Cheers
