Hiya Guys, I need a real quick and easy answer.

Can either of DML's OMMR type kits, 6085 or 6086, be made into just the flatcar without the sides? I need me a german WWII flatcar for a Wespe...weight class is correct, but I do not want to have to scratchbuild parts to convert the kits...

Thanks

Sorry, I don't have the answer to your question.

It took me a few years to find that DML's Flatbed, so I think I know how you feel right now. If a copy of the instruction sheet helps, give me your postal address in a PM.

At minimum the photos may help you determine the suitability of the OMMR kits as a sacrificial victim!

I was thinking along the same line. I've been planning on buying that BR52 and wanted to get a few rail cars to set up along with it. The thought of 70+ dollars for each and resin to boot was a major deterent. But getting a couple of the DML kits and converting one to flatcar to mount a Panther or PNZR IV was in my thought process. Looking forward to following your progress

sorry to steal this thread,

my question is regarding the resin flatbed kit in eBay.

What else includes in the kit beside the car? are the rail included??

My guess is that like the DML kits, no rail is included so you will have to find another source...CMK makes some railway. Or else pilfer some from the LEOPOLD kits.

I am not sure the OMMR cars would work for Mk IV's...the weight rating for the OMMR is 25tonnes. The Wespe comes in around 9, but the panther is way over at, what, 35 or so?

You need the bigger flat for the bigger load!

From what I have heard, it seems that the flatcar can be made from at least the low-sided OMMR kit, but no word yet onthe "Gondola" style...

The flatbed trailers do come up on ebay quite often, luckily I still have one safely stashed from when they forst were released, however I would imagine that Dragon will pick up on the new opening in the world of the military railway and probably re-release the set .

There are three lenghts of resin rail and 'wooden' ties totaling 43cm in length, there is no railbed (the stones) you'll have to use model railway ballast. but you will want to anyway Dragons plastic railbed look very poor.

I've been having the same idea. I have the gondola and the SSYMS. My research (not exhaustive) is that the OMMR is the next size down from the SSY. The SSY is not big enough for the Tiger but is for the Panther. (Maybe DML will do a Tiger car now that they have a Tiger.) The OMMR seems to be OK for up to the IV and variants. The gondola is literally just sections that fit over the flatbed, there are no alignment pins. I suspect from what I've read on the net and looking at the sprues that the gondola and the other one are not simply railroad commerce types commandeered by the military, but flat cars with walls added, armoured or unarmoured.

I say that because the gondola does not appear to be a real gondola, there are no drains in the bottom for bulk loads, and the boxcar seems to be taller walls with a roof on top, meaning the goods are protected from the weather. It does not -appear- to have a commercial use, though I think I've seen pictures of those types packed with troops. You probably could't get anything to big through the doors like a cannon. The Flatbed DML #6085 is even more so a military conversion with low armoured sides with firing ports and meant to be used with the draisines.

If anything whats missing is the brake wheels and other train stuff that mounts on the end, though I think I saw that in the box, I'm at work so can't check. The SSY has two of the brake wheels (you only need one set for the SSY) and other end pieces in it so you could pinch them from there.

I think that 6086 and 6085 represent basic military flat cars with modifications for whatever specific purpose. Unless someone can definitely prove otherwise I think you can safely leave off the walls and park a vehicle of the appropriate weight on it.

The tracks are a PITA. In truth there is enough room on the tracks supplies with the draisines to pose them together, which is probably what they originally intended. They did sell a set of tracks separately if you need more and several AM companies make resin tracks, though you could probably make them - go to the railroad section of the hobby shop.

Good luck

At least from my standpoint, that seems to be pretty good news. I too think Dragon will re-release all its rail kits and probably will do one that can carry a Tiger. If not them, then Trumpeter will more than likely put out a couple. They seem to like to cover the area fairly thickly . Case in point, 4 different versions of the 350 scale Essex and umpteen variations of KV tanks.

well, I think I will throw in on getting the Gondola type and go from there...hooray.

Oh, and the two OMMR kits I mentioned at the begining of this thread are currently in production, or at least widely available through places like Great Models or Roll Models.

for loading flat railcars there are some options...

light flatcar for trucks etc until10 tons ( ironside IR 55)
ommr until 25 tons (dragon 6086,6085) you can use or eliminate the sides
symms 4 axis 50 tons for panther ( dragon 6069)
sysyms 6 axis until 75 tons for tiger tanks ( ironside ir 12)

for a truck the most common is the light flatcar ( optimizing tracking power vs load transported )
