I had started the Tamiya kit MANY years ago (mid 90s) but shelved it due to an uncontrollable anxiety and fear of Zimmeritt. I was rumaging through my stash and "rediscovered" the thing. In the years since in my quest to overcome my fear of zimm I had picked up a cavalier zimm set for the beast.
So I started the kit to try the stuff out. I must say I really like the Cavalier set. I intended to do it OOB witht he exception of the cavalier set but found myself using PE leftovers, Tamiya Screens and a Lion Roar PE set.
this is a view of basic construction with the cavalier set applied to the hull.
I used 2 part epoxy glue for the cavalier set.
Rear deck showing Screens. I used Tamiya screens and 2 from the Lion Roar set.

I used pre-sahding for the first time. I hit the edged with a humbrol Panzer Grey. I was not very happy with the effect. the color was to dark and showed through the dark yellow base. I may try a different color next time.
I used Humbrol Paints with an air brush. I have not weathered or applied any washes yet. I will update with more photos as I finish. I tried for the unique cammo scheme used by the second company in Normandy from the Osprey book on the King Tiger (also in Panzer Colors III).
I will update mor eprogress. Any comments are welcome.

Hey Mike,
looks good so far, and the Cavallier Zim is a breeze to work with. One thing i would suggest is to not undercoat with grey on a late war panzer. Instead i suggest you use soimething that will simulate the red oxide primer that the Germans used. That way if any does show through your base coat, it will be in keeping with accuracy.

I was thinking of trying a sienna or umber. Truthfully after the coats of base and cammo and the light over spray the dark is not showing at all.

Isn't that cavalier stuff marvelous? I've used it on two kits so far and have a set for two other kits in the kit boxes when I get to them. Plan to pick up another set for my Dragon late Tiger 1. Heard the AFV version works quite well with it.

I have to say the stuff is awsome. However I dont like that you have to cut off ALL the detail ont he rear plate to put the cav surface on it. It would be nice if it had the holes cut so you dont have to do major surgery to the kit part.
I actually used a rear resin plate from an old Kirin zimm kit i had in my spares box.

Looks good so far. I would like to clarify that the point of a preshade is to let some of it show through. If you cover it all, why do it?

Hi Mike,
May I suggest that you put some periscopes in the commanders coupola. I really like the almost finished product.
Cheers

Exactly what I was thinking after it was covered by the different coats of paint. I will have to try it again on a different paint scheme. I was thinking a winter white wash maybe....

The eduard set came with periscopes. I assempled a few and a few launced into space while trying to assemble them. I may add them if I cna get the result I am looking for. Are there any sources of plastic or resin ones?

If you need a very cheap replacement, try using those clear plastic CD cases. Just cut them according to size and glue them in place. Since those plastic are glossy, I only paint the inside.

Looking good so far, Mike. The Porsche Tiger II has always been one of my favorite German AFV's, and I have one in progress too.
Funny, I'm hung up on the Cavalier Zimmerit fence as well. Your build my just provide me enough boost to start working on my own kit again !
Thanks for posting and sharing your work !
Cheers !!

I have to say I would recommend the Cavalier set. It makes for an easy good looking build.
However I have 2 complaints they may be working on in newer sets.
1. Gun Mantle/tube - is not drilled through to acccept an aluminum barrell. It does accept the kit plastic barrell.
2. Rear hull plate - they want you to cut/remove ALL surfface detail then apply the cavalier sheet with the detail reproduced on it.
Other than that I have to say it is MUCH better than doing it the oldfashioned way with putty or a hot knife. The resin sheets seem much more subtle and true to scale as opposed to other techniques.
I have more cavalier sets for kits I have been putting off because of zimmeritt. I may tackle that Late Tiger I in my stash now......

I have finished painting and finally had the pictures developed. This is lightly weathered. Currently I have no plans for a diorama, but maybe later.....
