Between World War 2 and 1980, the US went through several different tanks. What was the service life of some of these?

M26 M46 M47 M48 M60(round turret)

After this tanks started having longer lives as we still have M60 a1 / a3's and the Abrams in use. I know they ditched the Starship relativly quickly after they figured out it was a mistake and all the hulls were converted over to the a1's

I know the Slick 60 and M48A5 were still in use until as late as 1989 with the National Guard.

[quote.]Don't know where you got that info. By the time the A2's were pulled from service, the M60A3 were comming online. The hulls of A2's were used for AVLB's[/quote]

Not sure what you are disputing here. No, I don't know what exact tracks the hulls went to, to me, I was on late version A1's and they kept adding this and that to them so I don't know exactly when they became A3's. We had AVLB's in service the whole time I was in. I know they continue to field those and make more. Now the M60a2's were just being fielded to units in Germany in late 76 early 77 when I came in, and by late 79 early 80 they were being pulled and replaced with the A! / A3 type just as I was leavng. I know this because one of our brigade units had this happen. Got them 3 or 4 months before I hit Germany and were notified of the changeover just before I left.
