Which version of the Stug III and Tiger 1 would have been involved in this battle during 1942-43?
Thanks

The StuGs would be F, F/8's and Initial G's (not the Tamiya G klt, there is no initial G in plastic. There is a Resin conversion, or you could do it yourself pretty easily.) Tigers you will have to ask someone else! :-)

From what I've read, most of the SS units at Kharkov didn't get their tigers until sometime between November 1942 and January 1943. This would mean that most would be characterized by modellers as being early model variants, as opposed to the initial model variant used around Leningrad and in North Africa. My guess would be that the Tamiya early model tiger (the one produced a couple of years ago, not the old dinosaur from ages ago) would be a fairly close match to the tigers used at Kharkov.
I hope this helps (and that I'm on the right track)!

The Tamiya kit is good enough, but as with many kits that age, you may want to consider replacing/adding PE details, maybe resin, and possibly after market tracks. Dragon are supposed to br issuing an early tiger this year, so it may be better to wait for that.
