i have seen a few german AFVs with a nicely done air recognition flag put on top of them. I knew that some of them are made by tissue paper soak into white glue. I tried that last night but was not succeed. The colors seems to bleed onto the tissue paper.
Anyone know any article or perhaps explain here how do 'they' did it..

thanks

Zaidi, I made one for the 251/7 halftrack feature. It was the first I had ever done and this one was actually made from Irish linen, however, I would think that one made from thin foil would be the easiest to make, and would stop colour bleed. I have e-mailed you a template, simply print out the size you require, and with a sharp scalpel blade, make a mask of it to apply the colours with an airbrush. Touch up as required.

Silantra, I have successfully used epoxy putty, rolled very thinnly, for tarps and flags. There is a pic of one I am working on now in my Gallery. Its on the DML Pnzr IV E. You can also get a set from Archer that works with lead foil, but it is very hard to use.

What I do for flags is download an image of the flag I wan into Word as I would clipart. You can scan or get the flag fromthe internet. I then resize it to waht I need. Remember, reducing a larger image will give better results tahn enlarging a small one. Whn I get it the size I want, I print it on regular white paper using the highest resolution on the printer. After the ink has dried, I seal them with MiocroScale Decal Saver. When this is dry, I cut the image using a straight edge and apply thinned white glue to the unprinted side. This will soften the paper, allowing it to conform or have natural looking furls put in place. When dry, you can weather as needed and you have a very natural looking flag.

Steve, here's a link to a German Flag you could use as an air recognition flag. Google any I found it by googling "german flag world war ii." It's a nice big size, so you can bring it down to air regognition size and have a nice, sharp image.

Thank you guys for your replies.

Vinnie,

thanks for the email. Already downloaded it to my pc. I like the idea of using thin foil and paint it. Would normal baking aluminium foil be appropriate for this task??

Sticky,
i think you method is widely used... but i'm not so keen of putty. Furthermore the model in question is already painted. I'm afraid laying the still soft putty on it would mar the paint job.. but i'll give it a try on flat surface. I have miliput to begin with. This is great since i'll be using miliput tonight to fill gaps in my USS Enterprise... will try that....thanks bro.
Will skip on the archer stuff-too expensive for me

AL,

now this is what i called innovation. Using technology for our modelling need. So i just need a color printer that will print it..i got one very good printer at the office. just hope the operator wont be there so that i can print a few nazis flag !!!
will normal A4 paper works? cant wait to have it a try
thanks to all

I will try on these methods to get some variety and feel. However, i still seek the answer of using the tissue paper for the sake of my knowledge...

thanks once again..really really appreciate them

I don't know from papers, but the scarecrow's and standing rifleman's shirts, the chevron on the kneeling guy, and the guidon and flag were all done using my method.

Printer paper works fine - just make sure you have WATERPROOF ink and use water/white glue and set in place!

It's really up to you. Have a look around the galleries and just print out a couple you 'feel' are right!

It varied widely - as the allies stated getting better at attacking the tanks they got rid of them -it was too good of a target!

update on my first try

using Al method, i printed the flag using laser printer and normal A4 paper...applied the white glue at the back and gently press the flag onto the bakc of my model. Here how it was after weathering with pastel

maybe i didnt apply suitable amount of white glue and the flag came off the model...so i try another one

thanks Al for showing me how to make the flags..i will try Vinnie's method next..........

The flag looks good but I'm not sure how wise it would be to place that on a late war vehicle since the allies had air supremecy.

Al, yeah...it's unwise to put the flag on later war machine...the discussion can be found here

thanks
