I know that the Americans supplied Grants and Shermans to the Russians, but was wondering if the British supplied any tanks to the Russians?

I could be very wrong about this but I think the Vallentine was shipped to the Russians in larger numbers than any other lend lease tank. I also understnat that Matilda IIs were sent over.

I may be wrong but I think that almost all of canada's production run of Valentines went to russia, just under 2000 tanks.

I would think that M4A2s would have outnumbered the Valentines (I could be wrong though).

The Cromwell was also supplied in small numbers. I seen a lend lease train filled with M4A2s, Valentines and Cromwells.

Also I'm not aware of any M3 Grants. I'm pretty sure that these all went to UK/Commonwealth lend lease orders. The M3 Lee (plus the M3A3, M3A5 and M31 ARV) were sent to the Russians.

We supplied a few Tetrarch light tanks which must have gone down well.... There is at least one photo of a Tetrarch allegedly in action about.

Some of the information about US-supplied tanks on the net is a bit dubious. The M3 mediums were allegedly all diesel engined, but most of the photos where the rear of the tank can be seen show petrol engined versions. Same is possible for the M3 light.

The M4 was only tank supplied solely in diesel engined form.

Thanks guys, really interesting info

I'm particularly interested in the mention on battlefield.ru that the Russians tried to fit their 76mm gun to the Matilda II - anyone got any more info on this?

Thanks, Nev.
