I just put the finishing touches on a Dragon Sd.Kfz251/1 ausf D in 1/72 scale. I must say this build was an absolutely pleasant experience. The fit of the kit was exceptional, the markings went on without a hitch, the DS tracks were incredible to use, and, when completed, the model just looks cool .....
I used Vallejo Model Color paints for all the camo. I airbrushed Dark Yellow, but hand-painted both the green and brown, using four successive layers of extremely reduced color.
I also employed artists oils and Mig pigments during the weathering process.

Thanks,
Mike Kirchoff

Mike,

I don't normally do Axis subjects, however, looking at your model has certainly made me feel a little more interested. I like the way you have finished it.

I normally use Vallejo Model Colour paints and would be grateful if you would say which colours you used for the camouflage please.

In addition to this, you mentioned you used four layers of reduced colour when hand painting the green and brown. I wonder if you would elaborate a little on this please.

Thanks for showing this to us and I look forward to the next one.

Thanks for the really nice comments, guys.

Mark, I used Vallejo Model Color Dark Yellow tinted at a 4:1 ratio with Foundation White for the Dunkelgelb. I like to lighten the base colors a bit (especially in this tiny scale) both for scale effect and because my weathering techniques usually have a tendency to darken the overall model. For the green I used Vallejo German Camo Bright Green (833), tinted slightly with Black Gray. I used German Camo Pale Violet Brown (825), with a hint of Black Gray added, for the red brown.
Each layer of paint was reduced at an approximate 5:1 ratio with distilled water and a drop of Vallejo Thinner (524). Using a sable round I carefully applied the camo with the seriously thinned paint. After the first layer had dried to the touch (usually about 15 minutes) I added another thin coat - this time though, I avoid getting the paint close to the very edge of the previous layer. Each successive layer also follows this method. After three or four layers you have both terrific depth, and also a very subtle edge - which, in this scale, I think looks so much more convincing than your typical hard-edge scheme.
This technique sounds time consuming, but this brand of paint is incredible and forgiving. The entire process - for both camo colors - took about an hour.

Thanks again and I'm more than happy to answer any questions ....

I forgot to mention that I airbrushed the initial Dark Yellow, but then hand-painted the camo colors.

Thanks,
Mike

Excellent work, Mike. camo scheme has really been done well. Weathering is perfect.

Hard to tell this is a 1/72 Sd Kfz 251/1 Ausf D kit. Hmm, maybe I should raid my stock for one of these

Thanks for posting !!

Cheers !!

Mike,
Did you get that backwards?
Hand painted the yellow and airbrushed the rest?
'Cause the camo edges look feathered...
How did you do that?

Great looking model for any scale.

Model on,

Very nice, Mike!
I like the painting, this tehnique deserves a try.
One day I have to build this kit too...

I'd like to see more of your models, with bigger resolution pictures, if possible.

Cheers!

Very nice model,1/72 WOW i would be amazed to get that effect in 1/35.
Is it true that 1/72 modellers are only about 12 inches tall which makes building these teeny weeny models easy,or maybe someone was fooling with me :-)
