halloa,
i'm building an HA from the thunder run
representing a tank of B troop 3-7 Cav, wearing the skull with cvc on front turret.
i have seen some pics that the APU has been left of.
what reason do they have?
and are there more pics of B troop 3-7cav during thunder run?
thank and greets
Sander

Sander,
According to the Echelon Decals that depict that tank, the APU is there.
It belongs to the B Company, 1st Mrine Tank Batallion, 1st Marine Division.
The tank that the decals are for has a mine plow attached.
It's option 6 on the instruction sheet of Ecehelon Decals (last one on the right.

or it may just be another tank with a skull. i imagine that would be a popular subject on those tanks...

It seems that the skull was popular indeed :-)
These are for Army M1A1HA and not only the APU is missing but they also lack the Army Bustle Rack Extension.... hum...

The Bustle Rack Extension was only on 3rd ID tracks. Gino(HeavyArty) and Bob(Burik) can confirm this being that Gino was with the 3rd ID and Bob wrote the Concord "Thunder Run" book.

Pete,
The Army BRE was found on 2nd BCT tanks (1-64 & 4-64) tanks as well as 3-7 Cav's tanks... If I remember right. 3-7 Cav was north of the Airport when the Thiunder run occured, which BTW, happens to have been exactly three years ago today. TF 1-64 was the unit that did the Thunder Run, not 3-7 Cav. as for the missing APU, they are often pulled out of the bustle rack if they do not work - which is most of the time...

Tankrider beat me to it. Some 3-7 CAV tanks had the BRE as well. But they did not take part in the Thunder Run, they were on the NW side of Baghdad at that time, securing our NW flank. Thunder Runs were conducted by 3-69 AR, 1st BDE.

I think Sander would be correct in depicting it either way as far as the APU goes. The photo of the knocked out 7th Cav tank shows the APU missing, but of course it could have been there before the photo was taken as the photo was taken when most usable items were taken off of it, including the MGs. I don't think they would have bothered removing the extended bustle rack though (just my opinion as everybody that wanted them had them already).
I have learned something new here today, as I did not know some tanks in 7th Cav had the extended racks. I thought only 2nd Bde had them and the 7th was not part of the 2nd Bde.
Thunder run can be a generic term, so Gino may be talking about another thunder run by the 1st Bde, but the more well known thunder runs featured in Zucchino's book were performed by the 2nd Bde (including 1-64 and 4-64 Armor).
Sander, if you go to Prime Portal there is a walk-around of that knocked out tank.

3-7th isn't part of 2nd Bde, and no one states that. It is part of what used to be called the Aviation Bde and now is called 4th Bde.I have learned something new here today, as I did not know some tanks in 7th Cav had the extended racks. Rob, I was not saying that anybody indicated that 3-7 was part of 2nd Bde. I was just surprised that anybody outside of the 2nd Bde had the BREs, ie 3-7. Thanks for the clarification though.
Cheers.
