Hi Guys... I'm back to scale models after 17 years away. I decided to start with BTR-70 from Zvezda. It seems cool, with only minor problems. Anyway, as I said, after beeing so many years away I'm a little lost. I would use some help here: Zvezda only includes a painting scheme with no references about the unit or date of it. And it's ugly, as I can see it. And there is more... I don't have an idea how to find Tamiya paints corresponding to Zvezda references.

Any ideas about where to find cool painting schemes for this soviet APC and where to find Tamyia correspondences to Zvezda paints references?

I use overall Tamiya dark Green XF-61? for the vanilla plain green version.

Some from the Afghanistan-era had sand or lt grey overspray, but nothing spectacular or organized.
There is the ever-popular 'covered in mud, blood, and sh*t' scheme from Chechnya as well.. all those vehicles looked pretty dirty.

Mike, thank you for your tips. I've been researching this issue and I found a reference to Tamiya Olive Green as the soviet green for armour. However, I'm gonna try your XF-61as you already know what specific model I'm about to paint.

It's amazing but true: after 17 years in some corner of my place, some of my Tamiya paints are still OK and ready to be used!

About the grey in Afghanistan, well... Zvezda writes about a Sgull (?something like this, I'm not at home now) Grey.... will it correspnd to Tamiya Light Grey?

There is an awful decal on this model... they sugest some kind of decals that I think it's impossible to apply. There is a long strip, crossing the whole front of the vehicle, from the ground to the top, almost until the turret. (sorry for my english).

Hi,

Few minutes ago I posted on M-L a picture ( I don't know how to do this on Armorama )of very unusual camouflage of BTR from Afganistan.

If you do a search for DML BTR-70s, you may find a few reviews of this kit with some helpful hints. Zvezda has begun reboxing the old DML modern Soviet kits.

Zvezda usually uses double scheme of the paints: Zvezda/Model Master(Itallery), the conversion of Model Master paints to other can be find here:
http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/colorcharts/colorcharts.asp

maybe it's better to convert the colors via federal standart

Torgut--I would suggest going with Mike's paint color recommendation (XF-61 Dark Green) as that seems to be what all Russian armor geeks (myself included) use on Russian armor.
