The past few days I have been thinking of doing some Allied what if vehicles For example A Super Sherman Combine a large hatch M4A2,put on the E8 supension and add an M26 Pershing turret Add some 3rd AD markings onto it
An M3A3 Stuart with a quad .50 cal mg turret for AAA duty Have it towing an M8 (is that correct?) armored trailer for carring extra rounds etc
Last month I purchased the Tamiya T26E3 pershing at a Hobby Lobby for $21.95 I will be converting that into the Super Pershing using the Accurate Armour conversion I won't need to use the kit turret for the conversion
So for my Super Pershing I will use either the DML M4A2 76(W) or the Academy USMC M4A2 upper and lower hull, depends on which I can get a better deal on at the AMPS show
Then add on the AFV Club E8 suspension set with the Formations E8 lower hull
Anyone else have any ideas as well?

I'd think working off of the Pershing chassis to create an air defense artillery system, engineer vehicle or something along those lines would be interesting.
Likewise, using the Chaffee chassis for something like a full-tracked mortar carrier or recon vehicle would be neat as well.

Oh yes Robin Last night I was thinking of a bunker buster version It would have a dozer blade and a fixed superstructure and armed with a 105mm main gun
Or have a 155mm short howitzer in the turret

These are perfect for the 2006 T2K Campaign. I will look forward to seeing these. You have some great ideas.

These ideas are more along the lines of Luftwaffe '46. Sort of ETO '46 where the Battle of the Bulge is a failure on the US side and Germany drives to Antwerp. The Soviets are held east of Berlin, etc.

Well, this is not as "what if" as you might have thought. The standardized M45 was the Pershing equivalent of the M4 105mm. It mounted the 105 howitzer in the Pershing turret and served, I think, into the Korean war.

I know about the M45 What I was thinking was more along the lines of a U.S. Jagdpanzer The 105mm would be a long barreled version witha muzzle brake

There was something like that used in Yugoslavia.....I think I may still have that FSM issue somewhere.
There were all sorts of old stuff that they were still using, they had the hull of an old M18 Hellcat, with the turret of I think a T34-76.

Not sure if the Pershing turret would work on the Sherman hull, both for turret ring size and for weight/balance issues. Maybe one of the local Sherman nuts can verify...?
the ARV of the chaffee or Pershing would be really interesting...

Check out the Hunnicutte book on the sherman. I do believe they tested the pershing turret on a sherman hull.

The Super Sherman was actually considered in 1944, mounting a T26 turret on an M4A3 HVSS chassis. The turret ring was the same size (69 inches), and the weight was not unmanageable. It was only canceled because it was believed the Pershing itself could be made ready for production in about the same time. In retrospect, it was a shame they did not proceed, since the Pershing took longer to appear.
There were small production runs of Super Pershings (without the enormous spring housings on the turret roof as seen on the two prototypes) and uparmored Pershing "Jumbos." 25 of each were manufactured for tests by the Armored Test Board at Aberdeen Proving Ground and elsewhere.
The Hunnicutt "Pershing" and "Firepower" books are full of outlandish medium and heavy tank projects if you feel like kitbashing Tamiya and Dragon kits.

I was thinking about Pershing conversions, specifically the ARV Rob mentioned. I think a Pershing with wading trunks and a short barreled 105 invading the home islands of Japan would be a cool idea for a "Twilight 1946" campaign.
Just a bizarre thought for Saturday am...

Yeah that's the one I saw.
It's been a long time so I couldn't remember which had what.
You'd be amazed as to some of the old stuff they had, and some of the oddities that they came up with to recycle old or damaged equipment.
