Hi guys,

I just completed the basic painting of a Tamiya Sdkfz 222 OOB. Painted in Grey, used the airbrushing techniques mentioned in this forum. Did some initial drybrushing with lighter grey and Gun Metal

Cannot seem to post pictures, my teenage daughter is not here to help this wwek... Can see them in "My Photos". Can anyone explain how I can post them? The help topic has confused me, too much thinner fumes I guess.

Is the paint too light for German Grey? Please let me know how I can improve. Thanks,

Charles

I think it looks good. Is this the one with the PE screens on top? if so, I did the same one awhile back in sand color. The only thing that really stands out is the green on the gas can and tire cover, might just be me, but something just doesnt hit right with it. Otherwise looks great

Ah, you got the photos now.

Very nice. I agree about the green colour though. Also, you have a glossy area around some of the decals, but otherwise it all looks pretty good.

Very nice job, you are going to be a great modeler!

I would say, based on the photos, that the Grey is too light, but photos can be deceiving.

By way of constructive criticism, I would offer the following:

Your cannon barrel is bent or skewed. Should be easy to fix.

The jerry cans should probably be Dark Grey. Also, add the same dark wash you did to the roof of the car to the jerry cans to blend them in.

Your decals are silvered, use a gloss coat before you decal, then a dull coat to finish the model and protect the decals.

Wash the rust color on the exhaust pipes to make them darker, again blend them into the car.

Keep up the good work. My first Sdkfz. 222 sure looked a lot worse than yours!

Thanks for the info, I was not sure what solor I should make the Jerry cans and the spare wheel cover.

The Screens are the flimsy mesh that came with the kit. Royal pain to work with.

I had problems with the decals, trying to eliminate the gloss. I even painted over one with matt varnish but it does not seem to have helped. I will try undercoating with Gloss first.

I will fix the barrel, that is the easy part. The grey is somewhat light, I followed the instructions from an article on building Dragon's Tiger I, but I probably messed up along the way as it was the first time I used my airbrush.

Thanks for the help, I hope to improve on my next one, which I think will be Wittman's Stug III, again in grey.

Also, thanks for posting my pictures, I am still not very good with the digital camera.

Charles,

Great! Which paints do you use? Acrylic or Enamel? I would recommend Tamiyas' German Armor Grey or Model Masters' Dunkelgrau. Both very very good colors. I just finished painting the new Tamiya Stug III ausf. B in the Tamiya Grey and it looks great.

Paint the Jerry cans the same color you painted the car, or take the same color and differ the shade a bit, make it a touch lighter or darker. It will look great. The spare tire cover - if it was me, I would repaint it grey - a different shade, then gloss coat it so that it looks like leather.

Can't wait to see the Sturmgeschutz!! Keep up the good work.

PS The gloss undercoat WILL eliminate your problem - try it! Decal silvering is caused by the reflection of light going through the tranparent decal carrier film. This reflection is caused by the decal not adhering to the surface of the paint. Matte or flat paint has a very rough texture, which causes this. A gloss coat will smooth it out, and leave a nice surface for decals to adhere perfectly too. Many people use Future (Called in the US) acrylic floor wax for this, others use commercially available gloss coats or paint in gloss coats prior to flat coating the whole model. Hope this helps.
