Heya, Folks,

Just picked up the Lion Roar PE set for the Trumpeter LAV-25 via Ebay for a good price... I noticed that, like in the kit itself, that there is no MG mount for the commander/gunner.

There are a couple of good pix in the link Frenchy posted a few posts back (thanks, Frenchy! ), but I was wondering if anyone had any additional detail pictures of the mount as this area does not show up in photos very often. If I am going to scratch this sucker, I think that I will need a little more detail.

Also, is this MG a variant of the M-60...? If so, what variant is it and is one currently available in 35th scale (and if so, why not the M-2 .50 --- too big for this turret...?)

As always, thanks a bunch, gang!

Regards and Aloha,

Johnny B.

The US army calls that the M240B. The Marines call it the M240G (for Gyrene?)
Here's the turret mount, which after rereading the post is what you were after:

Wow, once again I am overwhelmed with the "awesomeness" of you fellow "Armoramians"!!

All of the photos and links were tres helpful! Specifically, I was indeed looking for the new scissor-type mount --- it is an interesting mount...I guess it allows the vehicle commander or gunner to utilize the weapon... Speaking of which, it looks like its parents may have come from the FN-MAG family (Belgian, ain't they?)...is this so? Just curious...

Will see if I can look up the Dragon Modern MG set...

Thanks again, fellahs! Yuse are a fantastic bunch and ALWAYS come through!

Regards, Muy Mahalo and Much Aloha,

So once again it's time for a dumb Grumpy question.....

If I want to do a pre-SLEP LAV, I use 18 Bravo's mount, and if I want to do a SLEPed, I use Gino's.... but the weapon's the same? But both will use the Fluted main gun barrel.

Well, might as well slip a second dumb question in while I'm at it......
2nd really dumb question---
When did they start SLEPing them? Date wise.......

Yes, sort of. The Scissor mount is part of the SLEP mods, but can be installed by itself as well. So you could have a LAV w/scissor mount and standard gunner's sight and exhasut, or one with scissor mount and w/all the mods. Full SLEP is done at Depot rebuild. Some parts are retrofitted to non-SLEP vehicles in the field as well. Same weapon on both since the M240 replaced the M60 MG in the mid-'90's. Fluted barrel also replaced smooth ones in the mid-'90s as well.

SLEP began about 2001. It is a slow project though, since the vehicles are done as they go in for rebuild on their normal cycle time.

In 1/35th scale, Hobby Fan makes the M240B (US Army) and DML makes the M240G (USMC). There isn't a plastic version of the M240B to my knowledge.

U.S. Special Forces use the M-60E4 and the H&K MK-48 (7.62mm MK-48 looks like a SAW PIP on steroids). No one makes those yet although the M-60E3 (DML) is still somewhat used by the SEALs, but the E4 is way more reliable and better-made.

Then there's the H&K MK-46 which is a SAW with rails on the barrel. The Rangers and SFs use that to replace their worn-out SAWs. A PIP SLEP is in effect for conventional Army SAWs and adds rails to their barrels and receivers.

Guns really do identify the service and the troops.

It's based on the 5.56mm M249

http://www.plattmounts.com/swing.htm

Lots of good info If you dig for it

Heres some shots from their image gallery - go to action shots for good Lav pics.

Yup, there are some expensive resin ones and there are some in other vehicle kits. Dragon's Modern MG set are probably the best looking ones, and the cheapest too.

It's also included in Dragon's "Modern US Marines" set (#3027) labeled as a L7A2....

I was in the 4th LAV (which became the 4th LAI, then 4th LAR) when we recieved the first LAVs... They had the rolling pintle mount (not the scissor) and FN-MAG MG's, which as several have pointed out are the M240G. The vehicles also came with the bipods, spare barrels and accoutrements to dismount the weapons and use them (note: no tripod). Further (for those who just want to know), the pintle mount M240 could swap a few parts and replace a damaged coax MG, which is yet another variant of the M240. It was a wire lanyard loop you yank towards you to cycle the bolt, either for loading or to clear jams.

Nice machines, the LAV's... we peeled them out of the foil they were wrapped in, and climbed in... they had that "new tank" smell

Hello Dave,
I work at the plant that does the LAV Turret Development work for all LAV Variants to include the Stryker (retired from the Marines now), and the 2nd picture by bravo is the correct version for the SLEP (commanders position ) version as it leaves the plant. I can tell you that there are other mounts out there especially for the Marines. The Scissors mount is produced by another company and an add-on that the Marine Corps adds on its own. The Slep program for the LAV series of vehicles finished last summer, not exactly sure of the date. We are currently in the process of updating the Marine Corps LAV turrets to a new configuration that will give the super detailers and after market guys plenty to drool after.
