I've read a few things about simulating paint chipping and have tried a few techniques with varying effects, mostly tape and graphite pencil. Yet I can't seem to get the effect found in this picture with the black chipping. I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on getting the right effect of chipping paint showing the black below. Is it just edgiing with black paint? Is so, what type of paint do you use? How diluted? Any general advice? Thanks in advance.

As you mentioned its probably black paint used as edging. BTW, you can use oil, acrylic, enamel or any dark colored paint that you desire to simulate chipping. I use black oil/acrylic paint and black pastel chalk. BTW, the black pastel chalk I use for edging is diluted in alcohol
Below is an example of what I said about pastel chalk, oil and acrylic...you can see them all here...including pencil lead
as well as here
Hope this helps

warthog,
This is a big help, actually. The pics look great! I like the second one. I'm going to try the pastel in alcohol. I've recently tried india ink dabbed on the corners, and I find it promising with a little practice.
BTW, how did you do the camo on this vehicile? Airbrush or paintbrush with pattern? Its very "neat".
